what are the pros and cons of a set of reduction under drive pulleys and has anybody tried them on a 99 318?

Pros: less drag on engine. Revs a little quicker, slight increase in power.

Cons: Requires shorter belt. Alternator does not charge at idle in many trucks. Frequent battery problems if you spend a lot of time in traffic and have a lot of electrical stuff on your truck.

Many have used them on the 318 and the 360.

i have had an undersize crank pulley ONLY on my '00 QC 3.9 for about a year now and no ill effects. even with everything on a/c, hi beams, foglights, stereo w/amp idling voltage gage reads 14. i still have the original battery. i live in south louisiana, if the warmer weather has anything to do with it.

seems to rev a little faster and maybe a little more power. nothing to write home about. i got the pulley for 15 bucks so i am not complaining.

Is there a harmonic balancer on the stock crank pulley?

99 318 here. Crank pulley only and picked up two tenths in 1/4. Alternator pulley is good for nothing but killing your battery.

hybrid, the pulley bolts to the balancer.

daddio,
Gotcha. I've never looked at the crank pulley on a dakota so I wasn't sure. With my car i know people were freaking out about removing the harmonic balancer when going to aftermarket under drive pullys. Their main gripe was throwing off the balance of the crank by removing mass from one side and not the other, unless you went with a lightend flywheel. Cool learned something new today...

hybrid, i've seen plenty of diff make engines and cars and never have seen anyone have to remove a balancer to install underdrive pulleys.

It's part of the pulley.

Well, he is sort of correct....with the newer dakotas the pulley reduction occurs by changing out the crank pulley only and for some reason it comes with a new balancer (to keep the weight the same?)

I have a 00 2.5 liter. I have not seen anybody use a under pulley for that size of engine. my question is will it work and if so how much? it seems impossible to find and cost is a concern with my small budget. anybody got any ideas?

Yeag get a bigger engine. I've got a 97 2.5 and there is very little if any good performance parts for them. I've found that if you search for parts under the jeep 2.5 you'll find much more.
