I've got a 1993 5.2L 4x4 Automatic

The automatic has roughly 250,000 miles on it with no rebuild(I'm not surprised it's broke ass)

Would it be better to go to an AX15 manual, or just go with another automatic tranny like I have.

What automatic tranny do I have?

Would a NV3500 be something I could swap in?

Any information would be great thanks.

Paul

I just got done yesterday taking the tranny out of my '97 318. It's a son of a gun. I hope I'm not in over my head. Regardless, The tranny doesn't need rebuilt, only needs to the front seal replaced because of a lead. If I had to replace the tranny though, I'd go with a manual in a heartbeat. I've heard of guys doing it before, takes a little fab work but can be done no problem.

I don't have any idea what kind of tranny you have, to old for my knowledge. I figured out what I had though by doing a web search for "chrysler transmission codes". There are a bunch of good websites that list years and ID characteristics for a bunch of different trannies. Good luck!

Swapping tranny's from manual to automatic or the other way around can be a hastle since you will need to replace or install, clutch pedal, brackets, slave cylinder, hoses, shifter, etc, etc. Plus you might have to lengthen or shorten the driveshaft if the trannys are different lengths and maybe relocate the tranny crossmember. Unless you can find a donor truck at a pick-a-part bone yard, rebuilding the automatic will be cheaper.

Heck, you might try the bone yard for a low mileage tranny. I puked the tranny in my 84 mustang years ago and pulled a 4 speed automatic from a Ford station wagon with 40K miles. I found the station wagon at a pick-a-part yard with all sorts of undesireable vehicles and set pricing on everything, $300 engines, $200 trannys, $100 rearends etc. The yard guys almost had a coronary when I walked up with a $1000 Ford 4 speed automatic trans,,, and left paying $200 for it.
