Its because there is a relcutor wheel inside the rear. It senses axel RPM for the anti- lock brake system and reports to the computer . The gear change won't affect it but the tires change it because the reluctor wheel speed doesnt change but the truck is travaling faster with taller tires.

Hows that??

TexasTodd, unless I missed something, I thought all the 4.7's delivered through 8 1/4" rears, which are about 75 pounds lighter than the 9 1/2". MoparDave had an '00; if it was an auto, it was a 4-speed. The low early ratios in the "5-speed" auto seemed to help the 4.7 beat the R/T in the "Mopar Now" article, in spite of 3:55 behind the 4.7.

Many 4.7s came with the heavier duty 9 1/4" rear. Mine did. Maybe you are thinking of the all wheel drive models that never see all the power to the rear axle alone ?

My '01 4.7L came w/a 9 1/4 rear - 3.55 open. She'll get up and go.

My '02 4.7L auto originally had 9 1/4 3.55 open. She now hows a 4.10 LSD.
