Message:
I will be getting my Mopar PCM for my truck by
the end of the week.

Is there anything I need to know? Like get it
burned with my VIN # or is there specail
procedures on installing it? I dont want to
sound dumb...but I want to make sure I get
this done the first time.

Thanks!

Mike

Assuming the pcm is in the same place as mine on my 99 R/T (and I don't see why it isn't) the installation is nothing more than five minutes of your time. Disconnect the battery, unhook the three connectors and then the three screws and your good to go. I have owned a few other vehicles in which I added a chip or did some tuning and the results never impressed me. As a matter of fact, the car usually felt slower and less responsive but in my opinion, the pcm on my R/T made it feel like a different truck which honestly surprised me.

A different truck....I suppose you mean a little
quicker truck?

Well I guess the disconnecting of the battery
first is a must...didnt even think about it and I
havent looked on how to take it off....but five
minutes was about close to what I was hoping
for. I should have it by this thursday or friday
and I want to be able to feel the difference.

Has anyone ever floated the valves doing this
simple swap....by putting to much rpms out
and the valves never close all the way
because the valve seal pressure wasnt great
enough to keep the valves closed???

Thanks!

Mike

Your truck will not feel as if you are driving a Corvette after installing this piece of hardware. It feels as if there is a nice improvement compared to when the truck didn't have this. Believe me, I have had a few vehicles in which I added an aftermarket chip or other tuning device and more often than not, the vehicle performed better w/o than it did with the new programming. This truck is different than past experiences though. Personally, I enjoy it. Maybe you will and maybe you won't. Give it a try.

I have had mine up to 6k by the factory tach and no floating. I did install the computor, Mopar R/T cam and reccomended springs.

Well of coure your not going to have valve float
with better springs due to more valve seat
pressure holding the valve close during
combustion.

But 6k is steep. I am not ready for that just
yet...but will someday

Mikes99Dakota ... with 98 and up, I believe that the vin will have to be put in via DRBIII (or equiv) scanner or the ABS light will come on.

As someone has posted, disconnect the battery before swapping. As an extra safety precaution, just ground yourself before removal in case of static electricity.

With the stock valvetrain, valves will float at around 5500 rpm.

Mike, It is not a case of adding the new controller and valves floating. The controller raises the rev limiter so you could turn higher RPM's. If you don't push it harder there will not be a problem. I had first installed the PCM and had pushed to approx. 5700 to 5800 rpm's with no float. You run out of power by that point anyway that is why I changed cams and it made sense to change the springs at the same time.

Mike...
if you still have the beer barrel intake and hear rattling valves it is because your belly pan gasket is blown...very common problem...kills power too.
To diagnose..look in your throttle body with a flashlight..any wet oil in there means blown belly pan...usually a small puddle back toward the distributer.
mopar pcm shifts at 5200..you should'nt have any float there.
