The reason why they converted the trucks to diesel for mine opperation is that there is less chance of fire with the diesel. The gas engine needs spark to operate (obviously), not a good thing in a coal mine. Get a bad wire and there could be a major problem.

Ok this is the first day I've been back on the web since my last posting and I have just looked for nearly 2 hours for this website and have yet to find the one with all of the forums and picks like I had found before, but I did find this one, which is kinda like it, but shows nowhere near the picks pluss I think this one is with the 5.9l Inline 6 Cummins diesel instead of the 4 cylinder... Anyhow...

Like I said though this one is nowhere as informative as the one I was wanting to find, but the day I came across that one, was one of those days where your just gooffing off and happen to come across something... Infact I think I was in the website with all of the pics of the dakota with the 440 under the hood when I came across the diesel dakotas... I wish I could remember the site because it had lots of very nice picks of the install from the procedure of the istall to the final installed assembly...

88SC DAK, That makes total sense! I never even considered that. Sometimes the obvious can elude me!

The engine to get would be one of the 2.7l I5 Mercedes Benz out of a Dodge Sprinter van. 154 hp and 243 ft-lbs is plenty and it gets 25 mpg city in a big a$$ van. Plus it is common-rail fuel injection so it will be quiet and smooth. A modern pass-car or light truck diesel out of europe would be way to go.

thanks for the link. it was helpfull. that is one crazy Dakota. I would like to put a diesel in one of the GenI dak's i have kicking around. one is 4x4 reg cab/short box the other is the same but 2wd. I think the 2wd because it would be easier. I'm just looking to have something better on fuel than my Big Block. or my 3/4 ton.
