what if i had an exhaust shop install a flowmaster muffler which i already have, and make a custom y pipe. is this better bang for the buck than a cat back.

My opinion is yes, do the Flow and the Y. But it depends on what you are after. I think the sound that you get from a good catback would be better then the muff/Y mod, but the performance and $$$ differences are pretty big for a sound mod.

I completely changed the sound of my truck cheaply by replacing only the stock muffler with a DynoMax 17748. It's awesome now, after it has burned itself in.

is the y-pipe a performance restriction, i'm looking for more power from the y-pipe, and both power, sound, and maybe mpg from the muffler.
lurkin, would the ypipe/muffler give similar performance as a cat back?

I have not done the Y-pipe myself, as I have not found a shop that I trust that has a mandrel pipe bender. The Y on the 4.7 has to be a restriction, the crush bends are nasty looking. Note that if you go down this path, I would make sure you replace all the pipe between the exhaust manifolds to the cat.

I would expect next to no _noticable_ performance difference in either one, by itself. To me, a cat back is for sound only (I do like the sound of a good catback!), although it may free up a few upper RPM HP. If you move to a bigger pipe after the cat, that is only going to lose some low RPM scavenging, with the benefit of higher RPM breathing. Basic fluid dynamics...

As for what is good for you, it all depends on where you want your power and what other mods you want to do. Where you want your power is the first thing that you need to decide, after that, what other mods to do should fall into place.

I want my power to stay down low, so I would only improve the flow by cleaning up the existing pipe bends before the Y, then a single pipe all the way back. I would also keep the pipe before the Y no larger then 2", and after the Y, probably still 2.5". If you want higher RPM HP, then this changes quite a bit,,, to true duals with a X-pipe.

I'm also not a good source for mpg info. All the mods I've made (02 QC AWD 4.7 auto) have had no affect on my mpg. Several of which could/should have, e.g. magnaflow muffler, soft tonneau, synthetic oil/fluid/lubes, air intake...

getting my muffler installed friday, don't mind a little higher range, in fact i'm about to do an intake manifold to help out with rpms.
y pipe quote was 200
muffler install 70
forget the ypipe.
