Ok heres the deal, I am going to begin a Auto-rx cycle to clean out my engine and after the rinse cycle I want to switch to your oil based on reviews from customers here.

I have a 318 with 63000 miles

I need to know

If I need to do any kind of specail rinse to change from standard to synthetic.

How long can I go with your oil between changes?

What do you recommend for weight. I live in nebraska we have sub-zero winters and 100+ summers.

I run a cool air intake and most my drives are 10 miles or less.

Amsoil does sell a Engine Flush. I can order it for you for $4.75 plus shipping. You can however still be safe on adding Amsoil to your engine with the little amount of old oil that you still have in your engine. Amsoil full synthetic oils are safe to mix with your old oil. Remember the Amsoil oil filter is the "heart" of cleaning your Amsoil oil and getting it back to all the needed moving parts. Let me know if you have any other ?'s.

DakotaOwner01,

IMHO, Auto-Rx (www.auto-rx.com) is better than the Amsoil Engine Flush.

If your engine has been well maintained, I do not feel that you need to flush the engine with only 63,000 miles on the odometer.

Question - What year model Dakota do you have? I am assuming that with the "member name" DakotaOwner01 that it is a 2001.

Amsoil = www.american-synthetic-oil.com Viscosity

Message:

DakotaOwner01,

You asked which VISCOSITY?

VISCOSITY ... in the general term is defined as " a fluids resistance to flow". it's a measure of the internal friction of the fluid or the resistance to the movement of one layer of molecules relative to an adjacent layer.

THE LOWER (SMALLER or FIRST #, as in "10w-_) NUMBER.. is the Cold Cranking measurement, made at low temperatures, using a concentric cylinder viscometer to predict the oils cranking resistance in an engine during cold starting.

The measuring devices, or viscosmeters, most often used are in the form of close-fitting concentric cylinders. The fluid being evaluated is placed between the cylinder walls, the outer cylinder is held stationary and the inner cylinder is rotated. The speed of rotation is measured for a given force to calculate the viscosity, most commonly reported in cp or centipoise units. Also known as Absolute Viscosity.

THE HIGHER (BIGGER or SECOND #, as in "-30") NUMBER...is commonly measured in capilary tubes, in which the time for a fixed volume of fluid to flow through the tube under gravity at operating temp (100c)is measured and reported as cSt or centistokes. This is used most commonly to report the normal operating viscosity of motor oils or the higher number.
__________________________________________________

" _W- " is a viscosity GRADE, not a viscosity MEASUREMENT.

When testing for cold fluidity, the temperature is lowered approximately 5 degrees centigrade between each test.

The Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity is tested at:

-20 C for 10W-
-25 C fpr 5W-
-30 C for 0W-

It is my understanding that the oil has to be labelled at the lowest temperature it meets the specifications.

It may not be long before someone comes out with a " -5W-30 " which would correspond with -35 C.

I hope the above helps you (and others) in deciding which "winter viscosity".

DakotaOwner01,

I am confused. I don't believe that the 2001 Dakota came with the 318 (5.2L). Correct me if I am wrong.

However, I recommend Amsoil's SAE 5w-30 (Product Code ASL). It is the oil I use, and it will give you both cold weather and hot weather protection.

This is probably a silly question, I had my truck custom built only a couple like it. It has a 5 speed manual transmission on the V8. On the invoice it is called Heavy Duty Manual Transmission. Where would I look to find out if it is the NV15, NV35 or AX-15? Thanks for all your help man I really do appreciate it.
