Subject: HO cams or gears?

I have read alot about both mods and eventually am going to have both, but can only afford to do one right now. Which would you recommend? My understanding is gears would help me harness my existing power, and the cams would give me a little more low end. Thanks for any advice. 01 cc 4x4 ,4.7 5-speed, 3.55 gears, rancho lift,Intense performance CAI, MBRP catback, and a few other goodies.

A bigger cam will not give you more low end. It will push your power band higher into the rpm range. It will give you more power but at a higher rpm.

Check out the other HO Cams post on this board. Fortunately, you have a 2001, which has the older, non-HO intake manifold. Keep the stock IM, and with the HO cams, enjoy more low-end torque; just the ticket on a 4x4. The HO cams with the stock IM and improved air intake and exhaust have been dynoed at 15hp/25tq improvement. At 3400 rpm, the improvement is 25hp.

ID4x4,
Since you have 3.55 gears and 4 wheel drive, I would recommend the gears. I would go for 4.10 gears, if you get a lift and tires you're going to need them. I have the cam, and it won't do what the gears will do for you.

Just because it is a 4x4, I'd do the 4.10's and an Aubrun LSD (unless you already have a factory LSD). You can always do the HO cams later. Take care of the most important things first. Which end up being kinda on the expensive side.

I'd disregard ed's claim that the HO cams will push the power band higher. Usually true, but it seems like these cams make more power everywhere - great cam for the 4.7. Gears are more expensive, maybe you should decide based on which you can really afford now.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Thanks for the opinions. 01 Motorsport, yeah I read that post about the dyno results, and was very impressed. 4x4Dak, I already have the Rancho lift, and can honestly say even running 33 mt's, my little 4.7 5-speed still pulls really well. I decided against the body lift for now, wanted to deal with some performance first. As I said, I will eventually have both cams and gears. Don't know about Ed's claim, but opinions are like everyones got one. thanks and keep them coming

What do you have to do to the computer to add the gears or the cams. I have a 4.7 auto with a kenne bell charger and want a little more. THe problem is is i can not find anyone who can "tune" my computer. Is a flash required for either application??? I know the gears will mess with the speedo..... no.....

With the kenne bell charger kenne bell should have tuned you PCM. You don't have to do anything to the computer for gears or cams. You should check with KRC before putting in the 206's or higher because you are running boost.

My computer was tuned by them (of course) but to try and find somebody else that could do it is impossible. I really don't want to send my computer back to them to reprogram. I would like a custom tune specific for my truck not just the generic tune kenne gives you. But your saying i don't need to for cams or gears??? If so that is music to my ears....

No other parts are needed to install the cams. I bought new valve cover gaskets for mine; just extra assurance. My '01 RC 5spd came new with a 3:92 LSD. What I have found is that the city mileage numbers are terrific (shift into second at 2500rpm). My best highway mpg is around 20. I agree that the gears are the best first step. Have the dealer flash the PCM to give the correct speedometer reading.

I left out the city mpg, which is 18.5 to 19 usually. ID4x4, your CC is about 500 lbs. heavier, but my guess is that your city mpg should improve as well, (after the "joy of performance" settles down..LOL).

Visit www.KRCPerformance.com. We do alot of work on the 4.7L. We can reprogram the PCMs and also sell a bunch of cams for it. You may even want to look into a KRC 206 cams. About 15hp to 20hp more than the HO cams. So a total gain of like 30 hp and torque to the wheels. You can get away without needing any major mods.
