Subject: CAT/sound
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

I've got a '02 4.7 and have replaced the factory gigantic muffler with a universal 2-chamber flowmaster. and it has a great, deep sound... except that I am quite disappointed with how quiet it still is, the tone is awesome, but overall volume pretty quiet. So my next question is regarding removing the cat(s) I just want to make it louder, and could care less about emissions. the vehicle belongs to me, not the epa ;)

anyone have any thoughts in regard to how muhc sound difference it will make, and also anything regarding a "check engine" light or anything of that nature!!!

Thanks in advance,

Bill

that's a good question. I have a 2 chamber flowmaster on my 00 4.7L. I too like the sound, I just wish it was louder..... maybe a high flow cat would help out. Oh, I don't have precats, I think the 01+ 4.7L(s) do.... so maybe mine's slightly louder then the 01+ trucks..

I have read that the post cat o2 sensor, can just be removed from the pipe. then you can hang it up under the body somewhere, and It will read the clean air... I don't see how that would work, because o2 sensors dont work below 600* or so..... you just might have to buy an o2 sim for that...

00 CC Sport Plus 4.7L 4X4 Auto, 3:55 LSD
Flowmaster orig. 40 series (2 chamber) muffler, adjusted tps to .76V, ported TB, home brew intake setup w/K&N filter, more mods to come!!!

Yeah, well the air belongs to all of us, and when you foul it more, you assault all of us, including those who have asthma. You are also helping to kill yourself faster. But Darwin had a theory about people like you.

It's also a federal crime, $2,500 fine.

Bob are you affiliated with the EPA in some way? Or are you just a concerned citizen? ------Bill9000, My girlfriend has a 2001 dakota 4.7 w/3 cats. I cut the stock muffler off right behind the third cat. It sounds pretty damn good. It is definately louder with a deep tone sound and it doesn't sound raspy at all. Most 4.7's with this setup sound really good with no muff at all -plus its free- can't beat that!

just for the remark that Mr. EPA himself made, I am tempted to take off all the cats, put a set of headers and true dual exhaust with one chamber flowmasters.

I asked a simple, friendly question for other dakota owners to discuss, as this forum was intended. I was not trying to start an argument, but if you are ignorant enough to think that one vehicle not having cats is going to kill off society as we know it, all I can say is "paranoid much" you probably live in a cave, too.

Let's be realistic, the earth is as it is, a vehicle changing exhaust has such a minimal effect on "the air we breathe" that for one person to be so upset about is is ludacris.

now, to the others, thank you for your thoughts!! I think headers would be a good investment, and to do something about the y-pipe.

have a great day all!

I also have a 2002 R/T that I removed the third cat and replaced the stock y-pipe with a flowmaster one. I ordered the GSmotorsports headers over a month ago (still haven't got them). When I do finally get them I am removing my precats and putting true duals and O2 sims on it. To hell with those damn cats!

If you are ignorant enough not to realize that taking the cat off even one vehicle makes air quality worse and not better, then you deserve all the physical and legal penalties that can follow. If you do it, and others do it, etc, then we're back to the smog of the 1970s....except that with twice as many vehicles on the road as then, we'll be far worse off.

I don't work for the EPA or any other gov't agency. I breathe air like all of you, and would rather be able to breathe than hear you roar by while you masturbate to the sound of your 'cool' exhaust.

Let Bill9000 do it. The only way to have the lazy law enforcement to do their job is to make it a big enough problem. If Bill9000 goes roaring by with a 100dba exhaust, Johnny law better take a look, then he'll get noise pollution and a $2,500 fine. We as message board goer's are not going to change his mind. Just answer his question... he'll get what's coming to him in one way or another.

IN response to snake and the epa guy... just because both of you think you own the world, and the material possesions that we all work for should be controlled by some agency that doesnt deserve or own the posessions...

tonight, I am going home, and opening the headers on my Mustang, and gonna leave them open for awhile, see how that grabs ya, better get a gas mask cause it's sure gonna destroy the world the second I start it...

grow up, some people like the sound of a nice exhaust system, and if that offends you, too bad, it aint your car, if you want your car all quiet, thats your business, some of us like other things, and diversity is what makes the world go 'round, everyone is entitles to thier own opinion.

have a nice day

Everyone is entitled to clean air, but you don't seem to think so.

Go ahead and suck down the exhaust. You're closest to it and will suffer the most. That's the funny part about all this. You're killing yourself. A bullet is cheaper and faster.

if you want clean air - that's fine, don't stick your nose up my tailpipe, and you'll have it, I'm not even in the same state as you... how the hell can it possibly hurt ya...

people are so overboard with thier "polotically correct" and tree-hugging ways, we all life on earth, and everyone is entitled to thier own opinion, your opinion is different than mine, we don't have to agree. and there's nothing wrong with that, you do your exhaust your way, and I'll do mine my way and let that be that.

if you want my exhaust changed, then you could buy the vehicle, but it aint for sale.

so again, if you dont want to breate the exhaust, dont stick your nose up the pipe. simple.

You assume my opinion is different. If you have such a problem with people expressing their opinions, then why'd you ask? Just go change your exhaust and let the whole world know when you drive around. I'm not going to do anything about and neither is anyone else on this board.

To answer your original question, removing the 3rd cat won't throw a CEL, the pre-cats would unless you run a catbox on the downstream 02 sensors.

You mention PC in your last response. There is a big difference between that and responsiblity for one's actions.... but you'll learn eventually.

What I meant by the PC thing, was maybe phrased wrong, I was trying to say by PC, that my vehicle is "supposed" to satisfy everyone else as far as emissions goes, truthfully, if someone else doesnt like it, I dont care it doesnt belong to them, that's what I was meaning, and I may not mess with the cats, I was just curious if it would help my sound be a little louder, cause right now, the engine cooling fan is louder than the exhaust is..., that's all.

Which is actually a whole nother question, does anyone elses dakota have a obnoxiously loud sounds like a flex fan when you first run in in the morning?

What you seem to be unwilling to recognize, Bill9000, is that driving is not a right, but a privilege, afforded to you on the condition that you obey the laws governing it. Break them, and you forfeit the privilege in an agreed-upon way.

So I foresee a few scenarios for you:

1) You keep the truck and maybe never get caught.
2) You get caught and become a felon, pay out $2,500 fine and have a criminal record. Also, you have to pay the $$$$$ money then to legalize the truck.
3) You eventually sell the truck and the new owner comes back to you with legal recourse to make it legal when it won't pass inspection. You have to pay the $$$$$ money then to legalize the truck you don't even own anymore.

Good luck.

You fail to recognize the rights of others to breathe clean air where you live (and how do you know I don't live near you?).

As to the fan, yes, it makes a godawful roar when cold in first gear for at least the first shift sequence. The instant it hits 2nd gear, it stops roaring and doesn't do it again until the next cold start. What gives?

yeah, i thought it was our choke. it'll make that sound till the truck initially warms up. torque converter wont lock up either. probably an emmisions thing to warm the cats up faster.

wat they really should do is get rid of all emmisions testing stations because they are all a waste of peoples time and money. instead they should just require cats installed on all new vechicles and the vechicle only gets checked out before it leaves the new car lot. then whoever wants to modify their vechicle should be allowed to do watever they want to it. Less than 5 percent of people in the world actually modify their vechicles anyway so there would be virtually no difference in air quality. wat they should concentrate more on is diesel engines which rarely come with cats and factories or smokestacks

Joey's right... most people don't modify anything, take a look around sometimes, interesting little fact, most people don't even remove the factory dealer plastic license plate frame, that adversitse the dealership. or remove those gaudy "4x4" stickers, etc. - so 99 persent of the people would actually remove a cat, I just happen to love the sound of a good healthy V-8. :-)
