I doubt if you are actually hitting any
" engine RPM cutoff limit " !
What you need is about 20 more HP
to get it past the air resistance..
May help a little if you drop the tailgate..

guys.., come on now, '?', do you really think it's a HP issue? He's referring to the speed limiter, set in the PCM.

i.e.- I think R/T's have a 99mph limiter, or maybe it's the 117mph, I don't know, cause my Quad cab, 2001, 5spd manual, has the 117 limiter.

This has been gone over many times before on previous threads, and there are many thoughts and opinions on why some have the 99, and some the 117mph limiter. I'm not sure why, but I'm glad my 2001 4.7 manual has the 117.

They have a 99mph or 117 mph limiter because it will blow up if it is stressed anymore. This is because it is a POS boat anchor.

The speed limitter is based on what tire package the vehicle has on it. They limit the speed of the vehicle to the speed rating on the tires.

Actually the sensor is in the gears, not the tire, thats why we need some kind of gear box or speed calibration to fix the odometer when we change tire size (its still reading the gears, however you are traveling at a differnt speed, so you are right in the sense that the tire size cahnges the speed, but it doesnt change the odometer or the limiter because the computer doesnt even know about the smaller tires)

You wanna shut off the speed limiter? Next time your driving, turn the key as if you were going to start it again and it will remove the speed limiter.

He was not saying the tire size, but the tire rating.

Here is a good page w/ a listing of the speed ratings for different tires:

http://www.tireguides.com/tip2.html

The manufacturer limits the top speed based on what tire they put on the vehicle.

Twopecker is right. The limiter is set according to the speed rating on the factory supplied tires. Which is why you should always opt for the high performance tires straight from the factory to get the highest limit speed possible. OR simply buy a re-programmer and eliminate it. Unfortuneatly no one makes a re-programmer for the 4.7 and unless your a R/T your limiter will always be under 110 mph. There is still a debate as to whether a dealer will disable it for you, I understand its illegal to do so as a dealership but that may be a state law issue.

simple solution, cut off all sensors, remove pcm, drop in a hemi with a 727 trans, and a 500 shout of nitrous, that should get you up past the 100 mph mark.

In the past i've heard this is not related to the tires, but to other combinations. Anyone here have the lower speed limit who doesn't have a quad cab ? I'm aware not all quad cabs have the lower limit. Some custom PCM falshes will raise the limit to where it won't be a problem - for example, the Leach flash I have (only available for '00s) raised the limit to 256 (max setting possible in the PCM).

Have you had it up to 256mph, yet?
Just kidding.
My R/T cuts out at an indicated 118mph. Period.

I have a 01 5.9 qc auto and I hit around 117 or 118 mph bone stock without ever hitting the limiter, but I do have the tire package 16 inch rims with 255-65-16 on it. but with the hypertech i raised it up to 128 mph.

I have the 02 QC w/4.7 AWD & I've yet to hit the speed limiter. Had it to about 118 so far. Prolly right at the limiter, but it didn't shut down. Tire size is factory 265/70-16.

My auto shop teacher in highschool was also our drivers ed teacher. He showed us a video of a car going too fast for it's tires. The camera was mounted outside pointing towards the tire. You could actually see it start to seperate from the rim. Pretty scary.
