 Subject: Any proven gains from homeade intake???

Id like to make my own homemade intake seeing as how many of you already have. Id like to ditch the airbox and have something like an FIPK, but homemade. Have any of you tried this method and actually had real gains? If so directions on how you did it would be a big help. Thanks

I've built a few.
The first one was kind of cool in design. It took air from behind my fog light and seemed to have a peak in power. But it was so stinking loud at about 3K RPM's not too mention I was worried about taking in water when going through 2 feet deep of water so I changed it. Now mine has two 3" K&N filters on the end (because I had two) and it just takes air behind the flap. Haven't finished sealing it.
That one is not too loud at all. Just louder than the stock box. But I can't honestly say it had any power increase for sure. The stock intake tube on the 4.7 is basically already 3" ABS to the filter box which then took the air form the fender.

The stock actually get's it's air, most of it anyway, form the fender, which comes from the bottom of the windshield, most of it anyway.
I used 'fernco' fittings, because they's flexible somewhat, and you get a good seal when it's calmped to the TB.
I built a wall of sorts under and on the engine side, so now mine takes air, most of it anyway, form the front and the hole in the fender well.
You'd have to have a sensitive dyno, to measure any real gains, but people will tell you how they got sooo much more more from their $300 intake, which usually isn't even a 'True' CAI-cold air intake.

If you had just dropped $300, would you admit that you can't tell the difference? It would feel like 20 ponies to me. :-)

This looks excellent and easy to do, but i have a 5.2 and the tb faces up and down, would it still be possible to use this method?

For what it's worth... It wasn't $300, but I had a Volant on mine for about a year (02 QC 4.7 auto AWD). I took it off this spring and put most of the stock stuff back on.
I never "felt" any difference with the Volant, but I thought that it "felt" stronger after I put the stock unit back on.

The only manufacturer to post trustworthy results is K&N, their dyno charts show a solid 8rwhp gain.

I put on a homebrew similar to Graphite's setup but with big azz filter angled down to the frame. I noticed some difference while towing up grades, but that's it. A litle more performance and better sound for $50-70 isn't bad.
I wouldn't dump $200-300 for a CAI setup, 8 rwhp is only a a 3-4% gain in power. I think the money is better spent on the HO cams or a PCM flash, cams or flash are about the same price and yield a better result.
