I agree with definately, if your engine runs smooth it is NOT the spark plugs. If you have a later model dakota you should be able to pull the code by doing the on, off, on, off, on ignition key manuver and a Pcode will be displayed where the odometer is.

if this is a 4.7l, you may want to make sure that you plugged in all the coil packs back up.

'yeah' i never knew that you could pull the code like that. So just turn the key right upto before it turns over. on off on off on.
then once it shows how do i decode it?

Do a google search for "( wahtever year) dakota Engine codes" that might be a start....
Did you do each wire seperately? maybe a crossed wire... maybe knocked another sensor loose... You can either do the code seacrh by key turns, or get a scanner for maybe $100 that'll allow you te clear the code too... those are the same things mechanics use to do those $100 engine diagnostics that we all avoid at the shops....

Some of the more common code numbers are P0300 (random missfire) or the missfire code for any individual cylinder P0301, P0302 ect. Injector codes are usually P0201,2,3ect. Some very common codes that can be set from a loose or leaky gas cap are P0456, P0455 or P0442. The new 1/4 turn gas caps are very prone to failure (moisture corrosion) and a revised cap is available. I can not possibly list all of the codes that I usually see on a daily basis but these are some common ones. Be aware that just because a code indicates a failure in a certain area, that does not mean you should replace the affected component. Most people think that a scan tool tells you exactly what is wrong but nothing could be further from the truth. The codes only indicate a computer monitored failure. For example you pull an injector code P0203 (injector control circuit #3 fault) this failure could be a shorted/open injector, a poor connection, a bad splice, a chafed wire, an open wire, a voltage spike in the tps or a failure in the engine controller. In most cases it takes a trained tech, a scan tool, labscope and a multimeter to accurately pinpoint a failed component. Which is why so many people are dissapointed with the service of a lot of auto repair shops (the lack of properly trained techs). Anyone can pull a code, but it takes some intelligence and skill to actually find the root problem. Sorry for the long post and I hope this helps.

thanx guys..
'yeah' it turned out that it was a loose gas cap
i had a "hunch" considering i have had it replaced twice. where could i pick up a revised cap that you were talking about? I just opened the cap and re tightened it and it was fine the next day.
except now i will be taking the dak to the body shop because some guy backed right into my truck yesterday. *driverside clubcab panel* nicely dented. didnt look, even honked.

Haa that's funny (and sucks, sorry to hear it)... but someone backed into the same exact spot on my truck yesterday. It was my next door neighbor. It must be a bad week, everybody with club cabs look out.
