Not to steal the thread TexasTodd but,
No clutch fan, No water heater and yesterday (Labor hot day) I came back from Houston to Lake Charles with my AC freezing and my truck barely broke 192 while sitting in traffic on I-10!

Gotta love these well designed 4.7L engines!

That's cool, not really sure why they put the clutch fan on there anyway, I heard the 3.7 v6's don't come with one.

i removed my clutch fan and just wired in a toggle switch before the summer. My temp guage has never gone over the half way mark. The only time it reaches it is when i turn my truck off for a few minutes to get my ice coffee. Soon as i fire her up it cools back down. This is only on hot days though.

I have all the mods you guys have except the true duals. I wonder how much of a noticable difference the 4x4 is compared to the 4x2. I know the 4x2 is faster in the 1/4, but i'm just talking butt dyno and everyday driving. i also run 31's so that'll slow me down some.

Oh ya i love when my truck shifts into 4th gear around 110, then is seems like it just takes off again.

I'll have to step in and remind people I actually had to put my clutch fan back on this summer!

That was because it actually slightly overheated without it when running 4WD offroad!
It hit the "H" one day earlier this summer. I was 100 miles from home but DID bring the clutch fan with me. I threw it on and the temp stayed down. Even with BOTH fans I've had the thing up to 2/3 mark when trying to get out of some deep mud or pulling someone else out of the deep mud.

So some advise to android287 would be to at least bring your clutch fan with you if you go out to romp in 4 wheel!

It's cooled off out here in Phoenix. Cooled off to staying under 110 degrees and I've been staying away form the 4 wheeling for a while since I been beating my truck up on the last few romps. I could probably take my fan back off.

Sounds like fun!! I took my 00 cc 4x4 4.7L 3:55 LSD auto, to 45 in 1ST today. I just wanted to see how hard it pulled. boy did it pull!! all the way up to the rev limiter... I guess I'm used to the 3.9L I had, that thing would basicly DIE after 4400 rpms! it did good from about 2250 to 4200 and it seemed to peak at around 3500. I guess thats the beauty of the 4.7L it is a flat engine, meaning its not peaky. it powers pretty equally throught the RPM range.

The whole idea of the clutch on the fan is to save you horsepower and gas. The clutch only drives the fan after it goes over a set temperature. The rest of the time the fan just freewheels, turning only because of the oil in the clutch.

No worries GraphiteDak. I only use 4x4 in the snow. My place of employment never closes, no matter how bad the weather. I'd rather a 2wd truck. I'm not the off roading type, but i have a need for speed, so my dakota suits me just fine.

Keith, when i removed my clutch fan my gas mileage went up some. Not alot, but it did. There is also a slight power increase throughout the entire power band. And no roar on startup either.

Keith,

but you're still spinning a flywheel, and it's not that light! It's still a few more ponies to remove it!

And people, I was talking 6 grand, in third, at 100 mph,

and I have a manual tranny!

Well late last summer I pulled my trailer and 3 quads all the way from Phoenix to Yuma and it didn;t overheat at all without the clutch fan installed. I think the only time to worry is when you are romping the pig at low speeds.

Graphitedak......... That's the first smart fan info I seen poster. I won't remove mine at all. A guy starts to over heat and thinks not that far over the hill or through the drift or mud. next thing ya know your fighting conditions harder then you figured but your now closer to the other side and not about to get out in that deep mud to put the fan on so on ya go. Losing battle and can get real pricey. Just not worth a couple HP in my book.

When you open the hood with the engine running, it's that big spinning thing up front that makes a breeze in the engine compartment.
Um...you do know where the hood is, don't you?

So how did you remove the rpm limiter or doesn't the 4.7 have one?

The rev limiter on my '01 4.7 is around 6200 rpm. Todd started this post 2 1/2 years ago, but he does have a Superchips now. I get reminded to remove my clutch fan, but I did for about two months time, and the temp guage would move to center too much for my liking. That is with a 180 t-stat even. When I had it off, I drilled a 1" hole and three 1/2" holes in each blade, and went to a smaller, lighter Imperial clutch fan ($99 at Advance). My truck dynoed 211rwHp/286rwTq two weeks ago with this clutch fan.

OBIO3, I had the clutch fan back on for quite some time. But once I sold the Toy Hauler I removed it again. It's been off for a few months again. That is because I bought an old Motorhome to tow my ATV's and stuff on a flat trailer again. Dakota wont be doing too much heavy duty stuff like it was when I towed 8,000 Lbs!!!!

But like you said, once it is towards the HOT side of the gauge, like when I was running it offroad in low gear, it don't want to come back down!

My plan is to remove my single electric fan and rob a DUAL fan setup from a junkyard FWD car.
Those things have a dual speed motor which comes on LOW SPEED for nomral fan cycling. Then when it gets warmer or you turn the A/C on the fan goes to HIGH and the second fan kicks on too moving a LOT of air.

I'll of course use a MicroController to stage mine based on A/C operation or actual engine temperature so that it only runs when needed, saving power when it is not. :)

BTW, as I have mentioned on other threads, the SuperChips moves the 4.7 Rev Limiter to about 7,000 RPM's. That's above where you will probably ever rev it so it's nice just to not hit the damn limiter anymore.

I guess I feel sort of honored to see this old thread again!

I now have 3.92's, and a 1 inch taller tire, so I get still get about 95+ in third gear, with my manual tranny-RARELY.

N56629- the 4.7 wraps to at least 6 grand anyway. However the dyno graph really falls off after 5500ish.

Without my clutch fan,
My Quad Cab dynoed 227 rwhp; 300 rwtq!

I've been thinking of getting a Taurus fan, 'cause it's a 2-speed fan, low and high, and lots of people over at Dodgetalk.com have installed these, which pull a LOT of air.
My '98 5.2 doesn't have a factory electric fan, so I can't remove my clutch fan until I install an electric one, which probably won't be for a while...
