Subject: 2nd gear shift problem
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi there.

I have a 1991 Dakota Club cab 4x4. Recently we rebuilt the engine, and regeared the diffs to 3.55:1.

At the same time I put in a B&M shift kit into the 4spd auto. The problem now is that the transmission starts out ok in 1st gear then shifts to 2nd and immediately to 3rd. If the transmission is cold it shifts normally, but once it gets hot it will not stay in 2nd gear it just shifts right through into 3rd. All else seems to work fine.

Any ideas?

I wasn't aware B&M ever made a kit for the 4spd autos. While they are essentially a Torqueflite with an overdrive, they're also not...in some ways. That may be the problem right there. How's the overdrive functioning?

Could have a burnt second gear. It is also called stack shifting in the tranny business.

Overdrive works fine. 2nd gear works ok if you manually hold it as well. There is no slippage that I can detect. The transmission just doesn't seem to sense the load in 2nd gear and as a result it shifts into 3rd.

I adjusted the kickdown. Am going to adjust the bands and see if it makes any difference as well.

I have a similar problem with my 500hp Monte Carlo, but it does it because the Monte has so much torque you never need any throttle to move at normal street speeds. When I pull away from the stop line at lights it is in 3rd gear before the back wheels hit the stop line.

The Dakota, on the other hand, holds in first gear depending on how much throttle you are giving it, then it shifts into 2nd and right into 3rd and it doesn't like to downshift when you punch it in 3rd, which is why the kickdown adjustment was the first thing I tried to adjust.

I don't know if this is gonna help you or not but
here at work I drive a 92 full size Ram. The
tranny does the very same thing yours seems to be
doing but mine will shift all three speeds within
25 feet from a dead stop. I've been also holding
it in second (2) so it won't do it so bad.

Anyway, I've taken it to the dealer for this
problem and all they do is make adjustments to
the kick down linkage I think, and all is ok
again for a while. I've given up taking it back
and just live with it now.

Hope it helps... Good luck

If this all started after the installation of the kit, naturally, that's the first place I'd look since, as stated, I don't recall B&M ever offering a kit for the overdrive models. Since the kickdown and upshift control all runs through the flow control valves, again, I'd suspect that either the kit has messed up the flow and pressure, or that some debris has gummed up the 2-3 shift control valve, possibly a couple other control valves like the throttle valve and the governor valve...all of which are in the valve body.

Problem is we didn't just install the shift kit, we installed a completely different transmission, transfer case, rebuilt engine AND shift kit all at once.

Still, it's exhibiting the symptoms of a valve body malfunction.

Does your trans have a tv cable to it. That sounds like a typical problem of that being misadjusted.
