After replacing my cap and rotor, I went to put my FIPK back on and I noticed a huge crack (1/2" and the widest part, about 3" long) on the tube side of the underside of the airhat. I looked inside and the plastic all around the metal ring was cracked. I ran my hand around and two HUGE pieces fell right off. They could have dropped into the engine at any time!!!

I called K&N Tech Support and the guy said there was a problem with the plastic used in the early (1999) Gen III kits manufactured at their Midwest factory(???). They've replaced about 12 of them so far.

Pretty excellent customer service, really. I called yesterday and the assembly arrived this morning UPS Next Day. They're sending UPS next week to pick up the bad part.

The only thing that bugs me is that I registered the thing, they KNOW I bought my FIPK for a 1999 Dak in July of 1999 - why didn't I get a letter? If I hadn't been dorking around with the ignition, I likely would not have found the problem before the thing dropped some nice sized chunks of plastic down my intake.

Anyway, just thought I’d pass this along…

Mine cracked too. didn't notice it until the new TB went on. I had it for two years. Who knows how long it was cracked. From what I hear it's a BIG problem with K&N GenII intakes. Check out the Durango Owners Club forum and you'll find numerous people there also had cracks. They sent me a new one but I don't expect it to be any better.
