Subject: 5.9 swap question

Message:
Hi guys, I have a 5.9 out of a 2000 durango to put in my 93 dakota. I want to keep all of my 93 wiring, so what pcm should I use? A 95 ram, maybe? Also, is there anything I should do to this motor before I put it in? Im in california (smog laws), but maybe a better cam, ect. I use this truck to tow fairly regularly, and at 2.20 a gal., Id like to see some sort of milage. Any suggestions guys?
Thanks!

A ton of changes were made between 93 and 2000.
I'm guessing you're pulling a 5.2 (318) out of
your 93. If so I'd begin by trying the 2000
Durango's pcm first.

I'd do a lot of reading up on and asking someone
that has done it already before I'd tackel such a
job.

Good luck!

Not sure exactly what the smog laws are out there, but if you wanna do this without raising an eyebrow in a visual inspection, you are right to use the '93 wiring. The only change of note to the engine involved a lazier cam mid-year 1993 and smaller exhaust manifolds at the same time. Plug a pre-1996 5.9 RAM pickup PCM in and liiiieeeeee like a dawg if they ask about engine size. It'd really be like running a stroker. I mean, how hard are they gonna try to find out? Cam swaps: Most cam makers offer some sort of cam that'll pass emissions. Mopar's own Magnum RT grind is certified through year 2000 vehicles, so that'd be as hot as I'd go in a tow vehicle (use stock 5.9 PCM, not the HP unit). CompCams offers an OEM replacement cam that works with all stock stuff (except the valvesprings...you'd need better ones), but improves power with mild duration but greater lift(.480 lift, as opposed to .410). Get a larger exhaust system so the 360 isn't choked. Remember that the 360 is externally balanced, so this will need to be addressed when matching a tranny. Will your 360 have the matching torque converter?

In California, the smog laws apply to the year of the engine. So the 5.9 will have to meet the smog control requirements for year 2000

Okay, so this begs the question. What determines year of engine dating since, if this were a replacement shortblock, it wouldn't be an OEM 1993 block...even if it were available in a '93 Dak? My point is, if you're trying to sneak an engine in that wasn't offered, one, you don't want to admit to it, and two, you want to try to keep it clean to avoid suspicion. Run the pre-OBDll PCM with a smog-legal high performance exhaust available for 1993 Dakota. Take away the OBDll stuff and put a 2000 5.9 next to a 1993 5.9. Can you tell the difference? Not unless you look for the EGR, or read the engine block coding, and that's mighty hard to do when it's in a Dakota engine bay. There's one hinge point. OBDl engines had the EGR, so to do this properly, you will need to swap out for an OBDl-era manifold.

Ill be taking the 93 intake and throttlebody off the 318 and putting them on the 360. They are both the same, even the the TB size (50mm, I believe, but could be wrong), the the exception that the 318 has the egr outlets. I have the big 93 manifolds and the truck came stock with a 3 inch stainless exhaust to the muffler, where it used to neck down to 2.5, but now is dumped straight off the back. The blocks are identical (the same "block family"), which is why, with the 318 manifold, it wont have to meet year 2000 smog requirements. The wiring and vac. systems stay the same, and Im betting that a good running, clean burning 360 will pass the 318s test. The standards are high enough here that something has to be really wrong (as in a smog part not working or not there) not to pass. And if it dosent, i guess Ill just move to oregon. Basically, the smog guy said that as long the vac and smog stickers under the hood matched what was in the engine bay, it passed the sniffer test and the check engine light wasnt on, it would be good to go. Heres hoping

Get a 1994 Ram 360 PCM. 1995 saw OBDII introduced on many vehicles, and was the standard on 1996 and higher. Your existing wiring harness will swap right in. The 360 is externally balanced, unlike the 318, but the engine mounts are identical. It will drop right in with your existing stuff. A 318 PCM will run a 360, but it will not run well. Once the engine is in you may want to consider upgrading your injectors to 21# units.
