Subject: DETONATION W/MOPAR PCM?

I was a the local dealership and I was asking questions about the pcm to a tech there and he told me the following: "If you dont buy the cam and headers the motor will detonate like a mother. If you dont buy the package youll be sorry. You should super charge it." He was bragging about his 99 1500 powerdyne sc truck that runs 16's here in denver. He was telling me that I was pissing my money away buying the things that I have and that I should sc my 96000 mile single mode of transportation dakota. I think that he is a moron and I got some advice from Dan at fastman t bodies when I got my t body and he said that he hasent had any problems with them. Can you guys clear this up for me, I know that you guys use these please help me!!!

The only way you will have pinging with a Mopar PCM is consistently running low octane gas or you have a blown plenum gasket.

I would be wary about putting a s/c on a relatively high mileage truck. The seals have already started to wear out a little, and you could easily blow one when it gets a boost. Should be fine with regular mods though. Dan knows what he is talking about. Your local tech is full of it.

If it's your daily driver, I wouldn't put a blower on it. Too many miles.

I also wouldn't put a Mopar pcm in it either. They are not bad, but you always have to run premium. Always. And if you decide to tow or haul anything on a hot day, you'll be in trouble.

I used a hypertech on my 5.9. I have it set at the mid power level, so I can use mid grade fuel. It tows heavy loads just fine. A few months ago I drove out to MA. Simply driving across the great plains doesn't take much power. So I reprogrammed it to stock, and used the cheap stuff without a change in mileage. When I towed a trailer back, I reprogrammed it again for more power. Simple.

I have on my 99 5.2 a Mopar PCM, R/T cam, Crower 1.7 rr's, stall converter and a modified stock intake. I can and do run 89 octane from October thru April with no detonation at all, during the summer I run 92 to 93.5, I have at times ran the 89 in the summer with no detonation problems. A few weeks ago I moved the crank position sensor to pick up the extra advance and have not tried it with the lower octane.

So I should be fine with just the pcm and no cam? and I want to do the 180 t-stat at the same time is all this ok? I figured that it would help with detonation. Was moving the crank sensor worth the time did you notice any benefit from it? I tried the IAT sensor and that did nothing but waste my time and gas.

Yes you will be fine with the PCM and no cam, the PCM is designed to take advantage of increased intake and exhaust flow, and it raises the rev limiter 1000 rpm. You can also do the 180 stat with no problems. The crank sensor change is said to be worth 4 degrees advance, I believe that KRC states those numbers. Can you feel it ? No, with as moody as these trucks are with the weather changes, it is hard to get a good feel, but the four degrees advance is good to have and at this point it has not caused me any detonation problems. One thing you are going to find is if you are looking for performance gains they will come at the expense of fuel milage, at one time I was getting just shy of 21 mpg highway all stock, now with several performance improvements at best on the highway I am at 18.5.
One last thing, I did the IAT mod also, I would rather have the computor see the incoming air temp then the heat soaked intake temp.
