I have a 97 V6, and I have a problem with the timing chain being extremely loud at idle, sounds like a box of rocks in there. Will changing to the double roller timing chain solve this problem? Is this an issue that is going to cause my truck to quit? From the shop manual it seems the 97 didn't have the timing chain tensioner, is this something I need to add? Any help will be appreciated.

I know somebody who has a 96 with the 3.9 and it was replaced by the dealer under warranty at the time. If you are under 36,000 have it checked at the dealer.

From what I was told today the dealer was replacing the chain because it was noisy but didn't present a breakdown problem. Hope that info is correct and it is simply a nuisance.

Just 3 Days ago I was driving up steep grade , lost oil pressor, engine stop, overheated , alitte low on oil, Put quart in after it cooled . Started it up it ran with skip but not for long. Could this mean that my 2001 Dodge Dekota V6 needs a Timing Chain?

Rick

One thing nobody ever mentions about these worn out chains. By the time you hear it this chain has been rubbing metal to metal a long time. when you do hear it , the chain is rubing bad. All this metal it's rubbing off is going into your oil. Now if that isn't enough to scare you into fast action correcting this problem nothing ever will.

Time for a new chain and gears possibly a new front cover too. Tear down and visual a must. Repair as soon as you can as it may save your engine.

It is a common problem on almost all 3.9s that didn't come with a tensioner, but it is not a serious problem except for the annoying and nasty noise. Chrysler has a technical service bulletin on it No:09-07-97 Group:Engine Date:Jun. 27, 1997 which has all the info and part #s needed to remedy the problem.

You can only get the chain tensioner from Chrysler and that is what is needed to make the noise go away.

Just thought I'd add my two-cents here.....I owned a 95 3.9 Dakota, and the Chain made some noise while it ran. I owned it for 4 months and never had a problem. It sure was noisy, but according to my dad it was nothing to worry about. The guy that owns it now lives a few blocks away and it still runs great.

Funny where these ideas get started that metal flakes do no harm to your engine. Totally crazy thinking. If this is a no hurt problem I'm wondering how many of these guys would poor say just a shot glass of metal shavings into there oil fill hole. I bet not one person would even consider this crazy stunt yet this is what your doing not changing that chain. I wouldn't give you 10 cents for your truck with terrible care like that.

Obie3, have you ever even dealt with that problem????? I drove my truck with the chain rattle for 80,000 miles and I always changed my own oil and cut open every filter, never once did I find any metal shavings or even fine metallic powder, and in fact my oil did not even turn black at 3000 miles so you are a jackass for assuming that an experienced mechanic such as myself is an idiot and your childish comment proves it, next time just give your advice instead of insulting people!!!!

johnny.... With all due respect your talking to a guy run his own shop for over 40 years. You got to be kidding I no nothing about timing chains. Your saying yours rattled for 80,000 miles and not a sign of metal. If in fact you really did have a bad chain there was no way in HEAL you never removed a ton of metal and sent it through the engine. You guys need to know what your talking about before you put it in writing.Have you ever actually replaced a chain ? If you have just where do you think all that metal went that got scrubed off your engine. I'd really like to hear your answer to this one. How sad if someone was to take your sujestion as proof positive this is an ok thing to live with and destroyed an engine long before it should be dying. I see a lot of guys in here giving sujestions that are totally laughable and if the truth was known they most likely never drove anything bigger then a bicyle. My ideas may not always be the best and I am always willing to learn but my ideas work provided I understood the question and problem being explained'
