Im not exactly sure, but from my point, I take it to mean the fact that their is no way to adjust timing, or that the 'flash' in the pcm limits what perfomance tuning you can do.... and that items like the mopar performance pcm arent available to correct it..... I first came across this term thru KRC, in their discussion of the timing advance for my 01 r/t.... I've since fooled around with the timing, and it did make a bit of difference, but not too much...
I'm not too sure if your's falls under this umbrella or not....
I'm hoping that someone else who may be a bit more clear on this topic joins in, I'm not 100% clear if I'm right......

the death flash sounds like what happens when someone's truck suffers from the infamous ping problem, takes it to the dealer and the dealer reflashes the pcm to get rid of the ping, you also lose quite a few degrees of timing and power as well

Do some research in the archives. The dealer puts a sticker on the pcm with some numbers on it. Depending on which numbers you have depends on whther or not you have the "death flash".

another Mark has it right.

I know on the 4.7, especially the autos, that a rouhgt idle, and some pinging-pre detonation, that they flash your pcm to get tid of it. It basically retards the timing, not sure how much, and takes care of it.

I have an old post when I was worried about it, and this guy CW, a dodge tech in Canada read my posted PCM #'s and said I didn't. I don't have an auto, and the only time it pinged, was when I used an off brand gas station- bad gas.

Matt, what did you try to do to "fool" with the timing?? I say TRY because there is nothing you can do to change the ignition timing other that reprogram the engine controller.

That was what I WAS referring to! How can you adjust the timing on that engine?? Do you think that by rotating the distributor you will actually change the ignition timing on it?? All that does is change the fuel sync! You are just changing the point at which the PCM decides to inject fuel. This is also why the "death flash" actually prevents preignition. The PCM controlls the ingnition timing and will "learn" the location of the distributor, if it is not TOO far off. If you think that turning your distributor will change timing, than you have found the cure for the death flash. Keep in mind that it if you turn it too much it WILL change which spark plug gets the spark but will not change the engine's timing! Grab a timing light and have a go at it and see what you find.

Look, I am a mechanic, and studying to be a mechanical engineer. I've been around autos my whole life..... I'm not an idiot. you CAN adjust timing, and you are right, doing it at the distributor is not going to do a dam thing unless you have a pre- obdII system..... IF you have a brain and can use it to figure out how the PCM reads its inputs, you CAN DO ANYTHING> WHERE THERE IS A WILL--- THERE IS A WAY..... FIRST. the timing comes from the crankshaft sensor, and the cam sensor.. the crank sensor tells the computer, and in turn, with the cam sensor, tells the distributor when to fire the SPARK PLUGS. rotating the cam sensor is not really a good option, but you can rotate the crank sensor, and in doing so, it can advance timing. removal is a pain, its at the back of the right head, mounted above the bellhousing, by two 1/2 inch bolts ( on the 5.9 at least). drilling out the mounting holes and removing the rubber grommet that seals the sensor to the bell housing, and rotate it clockwise in the direction of engine rotation (which is towards the driverside). bang. theres your timing advance. I've adjusted mine ahead almost 5 degrees.

you can check it out on KRC's website too, where I found it on the net, after doing my OWN research, and figuring it out, then searched the net trying to see what it held....thats where I found the term "death flash"

? - why jump to conclusions and think we expected to change the timing by moving the distributor ? Anyone who's been on this board for a while should know that controls fuel injection and shouldn't be moving it. We were both thinking of the crank sensor mod that it sounds like you didn't know about. Maybe next time you could just ask ? I think you are also wrong claiming this is how the "death flash" works - that likely works by retarding the timing.
