I'm looking to buy a Dakota 2wd extended cab v6. The questions I have are how are they in winter driving, ice, snow etc? Are you constantly losing the ass end or with a little weight they're ok. My next question is how is the 2wd for off roading? And finally v6 power, what kind of acceleration off the line can I expect?

I'm having a hard time finding a 2000 black extented cab which is what I want in a v8. Thats about it for my reasoning. If I can find a v8 I'd probabaly get it. How much of a difference between the v6 and v8?

sphinx, get a v8. i have a 2000 dark blue v8 4x4 awd. the v8 is awesome and the v6 cannot touch it. pretty much a v8 is slightly faster with an automatic as a v6 five speed 2wd, even with extra weight (one more person, 200 lbs gear). i know cause i raced one on the way to ocean city, md with my wife and brother in law.

The V8 clearly has more power, and the fuel mileage is not enough of a savings to make it worth while. But the V6 is a little lighter, so it will handle a little better. And the V6 is a whole lot cheaper to buy. If you're looking for a good inexpensive daily driver, the V6/5 speed manual will be tough to beat. I had a 92 with that drive line, and it was a great truck.

As for snow and off road, the 2wd is usually just fine. Depends on how much snow, and what you mean by "off road". A good set of tires and a little weight in the back is usually all you need.
