Is it me or does anybody else notice the difference when you drive with 87 vs 89 octane gas?
I feel as though the 87 provide less throttle response and seems to lag at the lower RPM range. If I run a few tanks of the 89 thru my 4.7 the thing seems to come alive.

Is it all in my head or do you notice the difference too?

I notice the diff as far as consistency. If I use one of the non-major brand stations such as BJ's fuel, the performance is not consistent from tank to tank. If I use a major brand such as Mobil - which is most available in my area - or Sunoco - which performs the best in my truck - I notice consistent performance tank to tank. I am fortunate enough to get good performance with 87 at Mobil or Sunoco. The non-majors gas is sometimes mixed and noone knows with what brands. More importantly, who knows what the heck the octane really is.They also purchase second to the Majors, and the really off name stations like "Joes Gas" etc get the third pick. The lower ya go the more sediment and less purity.
The thing that is affecting your performance the most between 87 and 89 is the fact that the higher the octane, the lower the fuels volatility. The higher compression ratio the engine, usually, the higher octane required to reduce pre-ignition. The ignition system is providing a certain spark timing and the higher volatility of low octane fuel coupled with higher compression ratio and lean fuel ratio is causing the fuel to ignite without the aid of the spark-plug. The higher octane reduces that tendency.
