To start with, your friend really doesn't get 16mpg. Either he's fibbing, or he didn't recalibrate his speedometer correctly with the bigger tires.

Getting more economy with your engine is tough. DC spent millions in the last few years to squeeze out the last few mpg's. Anything you do may increase efficiency a little, but you won't get back what you spend for 50-100K miles.

12 mpg is not good. My 5.9 4x4 QC gets 12-13 around town, and I drive with a heavy foot. On the freeway running at 80-85mph, I get about 14-15mpg. If I drive the back roads at 60-65, I can squeeze out 18mpg. It's basically stock except for CAI and Hypertech.

Brandon: what model 4.7L do you have? And yeah your friend is full of it. He's more than likely getting 8mpg or so. I friend of mine has a 8.1L Silverado on mud terrain 33's and he's lucky when he can squeeze out 10mpg while driving like a grandpa on the highway.

In your case 12mpg isn't good. I have an
'00 4.7L 5spd Club Cab 2wd with 3.92's and I get 16mpg with solid city driving. On the highway I get 21-22mpg.

To be good on this subject, you most try to beat your own record as much as you drive in a period of time. After a while, you start to realize that even the cruise control helps to destroy your average, becouse it will try to keep at the same speed when going up hill. In this case, the best attitude is to allow the vehicle to loose a few mph gradually, as you reach the top.(5 to 10 mph, depending on steepness. Also, obey the speed limit. Use it in your favor going on 5th gear with the engine at 1000 to 2000 rpms maximum. If you will have to slow down a little ahead, don`t accelerate and save on gas and brakes. Keep a good distance from the car ahead, so you won`t have to brake every time that the traffic down speed a little. Use quality gas and synthetic fluids and use the correct tire pressure . All these is tottally up to you. Now, on the engine department, whatever you add, will just add more power and increase the fuel economy at the same time. Mine is a CC SLT 2000 2WD 4.7 5sp manual, 3.92 LSD rear end with FIPK2, true 68 mm polished Throttle body, H.O.cams and intake mannifold, headers and single 3 in cat back from Gibson, no clutch fan, JET chip stage 2, 180*thermostat, PIAA head lights and shield wipers and clear directionals. My truck returns to me between 19 and 22 mpg, depending on what my desire is driving on cape cod traffic. My record high, is 23.7 mpg on a 80 miles trip, with speed between 40 and 55 mpg. Any way, try to work on yourself first. It works. Peace

Is it true that putting on a bed cover (to cut down wind resitance) will help increase MPGs?

Well, I put a tonneau cover on over 3 gas tanks ago. I was hoping for an increase, but these last three tanks have been the 3 worst I have ever had. I went from averageing 14.6-14.7 to 13.9-14.0 with the same (or slightly more grandma-like) driving on the same roads. In reality, I doubt it's the tonneau cover hosing me...something else must be going on. I'm going to do an oil change soon, give it another 1 or 2 tanks of gas and see what happens. Then I'll remove the cover to see if it changes.

Hi capecod. About JET chip, i think it changes some for better. The reason is that ever since i had my H.O. cams installed at the dealer`s shop, it has been pre detonating under certain rpms, engine load and anything less than 93 octanes. I think the cams may be one tooth ahead and causing this, wich i will check sum. When i take the chip out it tends to pre detonate less than when i put it back on. It is out right now. My conclusion is that the chip gives some extra advancement wich is the goal. As sum as i get this fixed, i`ll get the Mike Leach flashing, that advances the timing 29 degrees. Yes, i live in M. mills, next door to Falmouth.

Don't know about "good" gas mileage, but can get
you better gas mileage along w/power. All I use
is a minor tune-up (plugs,air filter) and a can
of "barrymans" oil/fuel treatment. always works
everytime in the tank, never used it in my crankcase cause I have no reason to at this point.
it costs about $3, can be found at checker auto,
Walmart. I dare you to give it a try, works evertime. >dave

Here are a few ways to increase fuel mileage to go along with all the other post above...

cold air intake
bigger tb "one equivalent to intake bore size" with modded tps for more radical timing curves
advance timing with timing mod + 1 to 2mpg
gap and degree spark plugs "worth 1 to 2 mpg alone" set at 12 degrees or gap towards intake
synthetic lubes "series 2000 amsoil in everything from transfer cases, tranny's, motor, and differentials"
If were allready into the motor "port match intake to heads" worth 1 to 1.5mpg increase
headers and exhaust "don't go to big or will loose low end torque"
keep rpms "esspecially during eccelerations from a stop" below 2000 rpms - some have seen 2 to 3 mpg increase from this alone "engine burns the most fuel durring the initial ecceleration in order to get the vehicle going"
Like ricardcapecod said drive in as high of a gear as possible
new cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs "ap3923's" shows the biggest improvement on the dodges for some reason
bosch stage III injectors "4 holes for best fuel atomization + gives some more power in 3000 + rpms"
good grade or brand of fuel "amoco, bp, phillips 66 are some good ones around here", stay away from hotspot due to extensive amounts of water in fuel
fuel system cleaners - very important to keep down deposits and keep fuel atomization at it's peak...
new O2 sensors and catilytic converter "if more than 60,000 to 80,000 miles"

All of these should help with fuel mileage, power, and longevity on any motor...

Don't you boys think that if it were that easy to pump out 3 to 5 extra MPG that the MFG would have done that in production?????

Cold air intakes, reseting timing, cat back exhaust and headers.

You guys kill me.

Want to increase your milage? Keep your damn foot out of it.

Of course the manufacturer wasn't interested in getting another 3-5 MPG out of their truck. They were too interested in finding the crappiest brake rotors & ball joints for their trucks.
