Message:
What are the pros and cons of dumping the exhaust after the rear axle or having it run out the side with a tailpipe?

Dump it! - way mo' aggressive sound, cheaper, less to break (ie- hangers, and tips). Clean look.

Nothing wrong with lookin like a redneck. I got my pipes straight out the back. Looks good and sounds good. Flowmaster 40, single in/dual out, the one pipe is bent around the spare.

If you dump it, you will have a bit of an in-cab drone from the exhaust.

Make sure the pipe is long enough, or the system will rust itself out.

Dumping it will also cause your right foot to constantly press on the gas pedal, greatly reducing your gas mileage.

I'll answer this one, guys.
To be short: no.

It is the equivilant of shooting a bullet from a rifle vs. a pistol. The air velocity doesn't change, it just goes through a shorter pipe (or barrel) before it exits. It requires almost no more effort to push the air through a pipe that is 3 feet longer.

The restrictors in the Dakota/Durango exhaust system are the 2 pre-Cats, the "Y" that joins the right and left manifolds, and the large "workhorse" cat. Modification/removal of these will be the only things that will cause you to have any performance results. period.

The bang may be a little louder with the pipe turned down because it has so much to resonate off of, but nothing more than when you drive by a brick wall and hear your truck in the echo.

Is the stock muffler a restriction too?

One "con" against dumping exhaust is that exhaust gas is very corrosive - it can dry rot your spare tire.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

save some money and buy a gibson, single side exit. Great kit installs very nicely and looks great, every one has duals and if you dump that exhaust you will be in for a lot of problems down the road, not to mention all that exhaust can creep into the cab at lights. Guys that know anything will know when they see that exhaust that you are performance driven and that says more than a loud p.o.s. take the muffler off a metro, it will be loud, but that dosent mean that it will be fast.
