I'm now ready to put together a "home-brew" cold-air intake to compliment a Gibson cat-back, but I can't find anywhere to buy JUST the filter, at least not in the general size that seems to be included with the Airaid, Z-tube, Volant, etc.

I'm looking for the "conical" filter, somewhere in the neighborhood of 7" - 9" long, closed-end type, with a opening of around 3 1/4" - 3 1/2".

On the K&N website, the best I can see is 3" long, and that doesn't seem right. These filters must be out there somewhere.

Any ideas?

Try intenseperformance.com

They sell conical filters in the size you're looking for. They're supposed to flow better air than K&N too.

Be wary when selecting an air filter for performance use. I use K&N because of its reputation and its performance that I have gained. Some filters might "flow better", but they dont claim that its CLEANER air than what K&N flows. A K&N filter will flow all the air you need for great performance, and it will be clean. When competitors make claims to flow more than K&N, I never see anything that says its cleaner air than K&N. After all, these are air "filters".

The Intense Performance filter flows more air because the filter has deeper pleats. And the end is open (not closed like K&N) with a conical filter there as well.

Ryan - do you have some evidence that the Intense Performance filters do not filter the air? Or where did you get that idea? 'Cuz I ran one on my Dakota. It filters just fine.

As a matter of fact, with deeper pleats you're getting BETTER filtration. Just check the website. You'll see what I'm talking about.

I am also making my own. There are 2 different ones you can use.

go to: www.summitracing.com
KNN-RE-0810 3 INCH OPENING
KNN-RE-0870 4 INCH OPENING

If you use the 4 inch, you will need a 3 inch to 4 inch pvc reducer.

Broheem, I made my own Intense Performance Stage II look a like with an aluminum 3" Mandrel Bent exhaust piece and a 9" Power Stack from Intense Performance. I have owned 3 other K&Ns and the IP is just as well made plus:
- it has deeper pleats
- you can order the inlet flange size
- you can order the color you want

Intense Performance ships fast, I ordered mine 11 June, it was on my desk at home 15 June, shipped USPS Priority mail for $5.

BTW, KNN-RE-0920 is a 9" long, 3.5" inlet cone filter if you want K&N.

Well we all know that stock paper filters suck, so any aftermarket upgrade is a good improvement over OEM. All I'm saying is: Whenever I see an aftermarket company selling performance filters, they all make comparisons with K&N, and that is fine. But, they all claim to flow more air. And maybe they do. But I looked at that site and didnt see anywhere that told me it was cleaner air than K&N. Maybe it is, I dont know. The purpose of a high performance filter is to flow more air (colder), and of course to filter it and keep it clean. I'm just saying that if you are going to make comparisons to K&N, in my opinion you should make statements that pertain to 1) airflow and 2) clean air. So, is the "intense performance" filters flowing cleaner air AND more air? I dont know. And that is why I'm wary of competitors. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and missing out. The competitors filters all look like K&N elements and color and design.

Thus, I stick with K&N, but only because of its name recognition. Hope this helps clarify my previous post.

The Intense Performance flows more air because it has more surface area not because of the cotton gauze filtering less. That is what the deeper pleats (more surface) and inverted cone end add to the numbers. It is probably the same material and same oil, just more of it.
