don't have part#, but took me between 6-8hr.s. This included a couple of royally frozen bolts, many beers, lunch, and a couple runs to the hardware store. W/the right tools, and no frozen bolts it should take about 4hr.s or less.

Would you do it again? Do you feel it was worth it? I was towing the other day and having a tough time holding overdrive. When not in overdrive the truck was reving at about 2700. I got worse mileage than my buddy who has a full size with the new Hemi in it. We were towing the same size and weight boat. This is whats got me thinking about the HO Cams and doing the exhaust. If it doesn't sound worth while, maybe I'll put gears in it.

The HO cams, in my opinion, but I didn't do them for towing. Yes, I would do it again. The HO cams do wake up the motor better then other 4.7cams in the low end,,,but I did it for 'street' performance more than anything. KRCperformance.com has some other nice cam choices for it,,but out of my pocket book's reach right now. The installation is actually very easy when you get down to it. What takes probably 80-90% (again in my opinion) is taking the valve covers off,,,and then reconnecting everything afterward - it takes some jiggle'n to get them off.
For towing though if you have the choice of HO cams or gears,,,the gears will definitely let you put more power down than the cams - you'll feel it more. Step up to some 3.92's (assuming you probably have the 3.55's),,,or some 4.10's, 4.56's, and an LSD if you don't already have one.
I did the cams cause it was only like $120 for both - back about a year ago. The exhaust is a must also!

I tow with the HOs and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. You'll still be downshifting at times, but its a nice torque gain. Sure your buddy wasn't just bragging up the milage on his new truck ?

I just got my HO cams and I've had 2 speed shops quote me 11.5 hrs. to install. I hope this isn't true because I've read 4 hrs. on some other postings in here.
That 11.5 hrs. was between $700-$1100.00 If anyone knows the book time to install and where I can get it I would appreciate that info.

$120? Is that all they cost? Nope, I saw him put less money in his Ram than my Dakota when filling as we were travelling together.
Thanks for the feedback. Putting a Magnaflow on next week as a start.

Do you mean a Magnaflow muffler or catback? I don't think either one will help much for towing. I think you would be better off saving the money for the gears or the cams.

$350, did that include the price of the cams? Is the best price for the cams through Dodge?

Brad,

I understand you wanting changes, but don't look for anything from a catback system, like the magna flux capacitor, except a lighter wallet!

If you're not very mechanically inclined, get a friend to help with the HO cam install. Where do you live?

Having them installed is no problem as I have accomplished tougher tasks. How come no one can tell me where they got them and what they paid?
Guess I'll have to go to the dealer and find out.

I was very skeptical of the cam swap due to the fact that the HO 4.7 has other internal engine mods like a higher compression ratio, less restrictive heads, specific engine controller, and a forged crank to reach the 265-270hp advertised rating, but after reading all of the posts about the gains I think it would be a good addition to any 4.7L. Most likely dealers will charge between 3.5 and 5.0 hrs for the swap. Judging by graphiteDaks install time any more time will just be lining the dealer's pockets. Most dealer techs have never changed the camshafts before (due to VERY rare failures) so they go by sometimes unusually overestimated book times just to get out of doing the job. Some dealers are reluctant to do such mods due to the possibilites of legal or warranty issues.

Oh, sorry man.

I bought mine from KRC performance, like many others did.

Yeah, the shop would probably take a few hours as well. Sometimes I trust myself more than the mechanics at a dealer. I have powertools so that kind of speeded up the process as far as unbolting it all. Bolting it back up is more delicate. You will need a inch pound torque wrench too.

Brad,

oh, sorry about not answering your ?.

I had them shipped to my door, in the Houston TX area, from a dodge dealer in Rhode Island.

HO cams, brand new, $112, that included the shipping! That was for BOTH cams. Retailed for $53 a piece. That WAS well over 1 year ago.

Good luck, it's the one mod that's worth every penny.
