Subject: Transmission Whine??

Message:
I have a 1998 V6 Dakota Sport. I have noticed a "whine" coming from the manual transmission. Thought that it might be clutch related and since the original had 65,000 on it I decided to change the clutch and pilot bearing. But...(why is there always a but)...the whine continues. It is more noticable in 1st - 3rd gear and seems to be less or non existent in 4th and 5th. When the clutch is pushed in the noise goes away. Once the clutch is left out.."there it is"!!! Can anyone please shed some light on this? Is this a sign of my transmission going or what? Thanks in advance!

I have an 01 4.7 5 speed that does the same thing. I had it at the dealership multiple times, the first time they said it wasn't normal and they tore the transmission apart looking for the problem. They didn't find anything. I took it to a different dealership and after they had it all day the tech told me it was just a noisey transmission and its normal. I don't buy it but its been doing it for over 30k miles and I haven't had any problems.

long post, but good experiment..

I too had a whine from my NV3500 manual trans. started at an early 5000 miles. Thru searching on the internet found out quite a few of these trannys go bad, because of bad gear alignment or assy/quality problems, but not enough to justify a recall. These tranny are also used in Chevy 1500's. Dodge specs a specific lube for this transm., really thin stuff similar to syncromesh (approx 5W30). GM also has their own version of the lube.
Before going back to my dealer to have it checked/repaired/replaced, decided to do some testing. Drained the Mopar fluid at 8000 miles, there was large metal particles/shavings on drain plug magnet. Re-filled with half & half mix of Redline Oil: -MTL- (70W80) & MT90 (75W90) manual transm. lube.
(a recommended mix on many forums)
Much quieter, but even good oil doesn't fix bad gears. Before bringing the truck back to the dealership I decided to rince out with a couple of flushes of the famous Mopar fluid to remove any traces of the non-specific oil I used to avoid warranty problems...

After 3000 miles with Redline mix, the drain plug had very fine powder deposits instead of large shavings. Drove for one (1) day only and drained/refilled once more with the Mopar oil, suprize! , after only one (1) day / 50 miles, large shavings re-appeared along with a chipped gear.
I never towed or carry a load, empty truck all the time and I'm very nice on the gearshift, never force a gear to engage, just put light pressure until it syncronizes. But the whine got progessively louder, to the point it sounded like a siren at a certain RPM.

The dealership replaced my tranny under warranty,
but what suprised me was when I saw the shop work order..It listed the parts received in the replacement tranny kit, 1) complete trans. 2) lubricant... it wasn't the same as the one spec'd in the manual but the more conventional gear lube that the NV4500 (Ram 2500/3500) uses, a synthetic 75W GL-4 gearlube.
Maybe Dodge or New Venture (NV) realized that their specific lube was too thin ?

But first chance I get, I'm going back to the Redline mix.
& thank you to my dealership for great service

My father has an 00 reg cab dakota 2wd with a 4.7L (goes like a rocket) but had what sounded like gear noise. At the time I owned a 99 rc 4x4 dakota with the same trans and a 5.2L which had almost no noise. So (as a tech at the dealership) after driving a couple of other brand new similarly equipped trucks (although not 2wd) that did not have any of the same noises I decided to replace the trans. No change. After having the rare opportunity to drive an exact version of the 2wd 4.7L truck I found it to have the same noise. It turns out that the 2wd version has less cab isolation and resonates more drivetrain noise. This may not be the same noise you are explaining though. We have VERY rarely seen any NV3500 trans failures and this trans will be my choice when I buy my fourth dakota if they are available.

The noise you are hearing is the "Rear Bearing" Going out in the transmission. I have a `96 1500 Ram with 50,000 miles on it. It's the sames gears as yours also including reverse which has never worked very well.

This happened to me on a 1987 Nissan Pickup (D21) Manual 5 speed 2WD. First it was the whine, I asked the local shade tree mechanic who said just keep driving. I drove another 1,000 miles and then it started with a clunky rubbing noise and loss in performance. I got another 40 miles when it got scary loud and performance was shot. Got towed home and removed the tranny. Throwout bearing looks perfect, No noticeable problem from the outside. Thinking it is internal and looking at new transmission or rebuild.

Clutch went 3 months after i relpaced it. Looking in

Update on the "1987 Nissan Pickup (D21) Manual 5
speed 2WD": Replaced the transmission with a used
transmission from the pick and pull. Ran fine for
about 250 miles but now I am noticing a faint high
pitched whine again. I might be hyper-sensitive to
it since last time I heard that whine it cost me
$1400, but I am worried I might go through the same
thing all over again.
