Installed Vortech supercharger on my R/T.
Is the plenum really suppose to get that hot. Hot to the touch and burn if you leave it there.

I don't have a S/C but know that anytime you compress air it WILL be hot!

If you look at a simple shop air compressor they have some sort of loop in the discharge line or such to disapate heat.

Better keep the boost low until you get an intercooler or you pay have predetonation. That kills!

GENIII,
The engine is not running hot. It runs the same temp as day one. It's just the plenum is hot to the touch. Only running 8lb of boost. I get the compress air theory. But is not cool air what we are aiming for. If the plenum is hot, does that mean so is the air traveling inside?

I run an ATI procharger set-up with the intercooler. Mine you can touch immediately after a race.

Compressed air heats very quickly and yes 8 lbs of boost is quite a lot. How's your air/fuel ratio?

If you haven't checked it on a dyno I suggest doing it right away to insure you are not running lean.

I am dyno testing this week. No detonation at full throttle. leaness air/fuel not sure.? Explain the intercooler on your application if possible. I called Vortech they say the hotness in normal? I am thinking hot air can not be good.

COOLER air lets you have MORE Oxygen molecules in a given area. Helps even on N/A apps.
When you have BOOST your cramming a sh*t load of Oxygen together in a small area any way, BUT it does get HOT form compression. Running an intercooler to lower the temps before entering your cylinder would allow more boost (and more timing advance) without pre-detonation. Running COLDER temp spark plugs could be a good thing to do as well. (They have a different REACH so the tip, etc is cooled better form the water jacket in the heads). Air/Fuel under higher compression has a lower flash point. Look how desiels fire with no spark.

That's from my understanding anyway.
Someone else could always chime in with specifics.

GENIII, Just got back form the Dyno. We got it up to 293rhp but there was a little transitional detonation. To get a complete none detonation run we added so much retard that it started sucking away my HP. Intercooler or injection is in order. I am already running cooler plugs. The gas here in California is another issue. Can't get over 91 octane. Octane boost does not raise enough to get to 93 which would help. I think the dyno read 17.5 air/fuel mix? Don't hold me to that number I do not have the graph in front of me. Are the any kits that go well with the vortech v2 SQ. 8lb of boost is enough to get over 300rhp. Why do they not sell the WHOLE kit together. That would make sense.

17.5 is way too lean. You need to figure a way to richen your mixture first (if that number is accurate) before you do anything else.

What is a good air/fuel number? I will double check with my dyno guy. What are my choices in richening the mix?

GENIII,
From the chart
14.1 @ 2800 RPM
13.0 During peak HP
12.9 @ 5500 RPM
Good or bad?

Under full boost you should be around 12 to 1.

Looking at the chart under full boost the graph read one dash above 12 and 3 dashes below 13. My guess is 12.3 Is that close enough? How technical/accurate are we dealing with? Thanks for your help.

I could give you a rough rule of thumb.. if you have a Vortex and run it a 10 PSI boost, It will not be a full boost untill you wind it up.. then if it is say 80* Ambent and the compression will add another 100* this will give you a rought inlet temp of 180* F or close too. (Time for water injection)

Kevin do you have any other mods on the truck or just the powerdyne setup?

Those power numbers are low for a charged setup unless your bone stock.

Those numbers are air/fuel ratios. I am running Vortech SQ-Trim 8# pulley,GS Motorsport R/T headers and Spintech true dual exhaust side exit. 3rd cat removed. Need to install intercooler which is on order to allow more timing to be put in. best run on dyno was 293 rwhp with a lot off retard to stop detonation. California gas is only 91 octane (sucks) Should be in the mid 300 after cooler install.

We have 91 octane in NMex as well. I did some searching on the net and found that you can use this stuff "Toluene" as an octane booster. I ran it in my CBR 954 with no problems at all. With the fuel capacity on the bike and one gallon of the stuff I was running 95 octane in it. I have an excel spread sheet with all the numbers/ratios if anybody would like it. I can email it to you. The Toluene is not cheap, (as with anything the more you buy the cheaper it gets) but a blown engine from detonation isn't cheap either...
