Subject: How do I remove fan on magnum?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1999 Dakota 318, and I just purchased a Flex-a-lite BM 150 to replace my stock belt driven fan. My question is this: Does anyone know how the HELL you are supposed to remove the fan. The Magnum motors have a nut that holds the fan onto a stud that sticks out of the water pump. I cannot hold the d@mn water pump with anything to keep it from turning while trying to loosen the nut. According to my Haynes manual (which sucks), there is supposed to be a special tool "available at most auto parts stores" to hold the bolts on the WP pulley so it wont turn. First of all, there are no bolts, the frigin nut that attaches the fan clutch to the pulley, holds the pulley on the stud, and second, the guy at Auto Zone didn't know what the hell I was talking about. One more thing, I don't even know which way I should be turning the nut to loosen it. Haynes book says counter-clockwise, and Auto Zone man says clockwise. This is becoming an incredibly aggravating project, and this is my daily driver so I have to put everything back together and drive it the next day when I fail to make any progress. Thanks ahead for all of your help, if any.

I used a 15" cresent wrench. and a 3-4 lb hammer.
I put the wrench on the nut (nothing holding the pulley) smacked it with the hammer (swinging the hammer from drivers side to passenger side or counter-clockwise). after the first hit, i had to move the wrench back up where I could hit it again. after the 2nd hit, the wrench swung all the way around to the bottom. Then i just turned the fan til it came off (counter clockwise)

If you just put the wrench on and turn it by hand, the whole thing will turn.

use a fan clutch removal tool. heres a link so you know what youre looking for.

you dont need all of them i cant remember which size it is. the hammer and crescent wrench trick does work...but getting the fan back on can be really tricky (if necessary).... hope this helps.

when i removed mine, i sprayed the nut down with some wd40, clamped on a vise grip really good and snug, then just took a rubber mallet and hit the vise grip a few times (facing the engine, from right to left) and it spun right off.

famous last words....

i remember when i was still more of an alley mechanic...im not saying im the greatest or anything, but ive come a long way... changed out my own engine, trans, heater core, heads, cam, all that crap...right in my own garage... i wonder how those would have turned out if i went by the 'dont buy the tool, just use a....' motto.

go to autozone, rent the tool, do it right... my fan spun through my radiator when i used the hillrod special logic.

Hey thanks for the help everyone.I got the fan off with a Ford clutch removal wrench I borrowed from Auto Zone, and yes the belt was slipping. Unforunately I felt the need to replace my thermostat ( I am also replacing my water pump). First turn of one of the bolts on the thermostat housing snapped one of the bolt heads clean off, so the funny thing is, removing the fan yesterday was the easiest thing I did.

I just removed mine and it was a piece of cake.

I have a question about the stock electric fan... I know it turns on with the AC, but will it also kick on if it starts running hot or would it be best to make it run all the time? If so, how?

the e-fan has a thermostatically controlled switch built in to the relay wiring...if you want to have it run all the time (which i would not) you could just delete the sensor...personally i would leave it to just go on when the computer says it should.

That sounds like a good idea. I drove it around after I removed the fan and it never got any hotter than it did with it on. It was almost 90 degrees out at the time. Although, letting it idle in the driveway did get it to almost 210. I'll keep the fan and the big wrench in the truck just in case...

UPDATE:
I'm going to be re-installing the clutch fan tonight. I think it's a little too hot right now. I'll still remove it when I get to the track, though.
It crept up to almost 210. I had teh AC running so the electric fan was running, but not doing a very good job keeping up. Definately not a summer mod. I've got a Perma-Cool 14" fan. I might try to fab up a bracket for it or something.

RUthLEss, where are you? I removed my clutch fan and have a 180 stat and no probs. it's been in the high 80's to low 90's here. my temp gage stays right @ the bottom edge of the 2 where it reads 210 w/ or w/o the AC on. '00 3.9 QC 5 spd.

I'm in Kansas. The temp doesn't even get close to the '2' if I'm driving at least 35 all the time. It's the sitting at red lights that makes it climb. The hottest it got today was right in the middle of the '2' with the AC on. I've also got Redline Water Wetter in it, but it's still a 50/50 mix (antifreeze/water).

having the gauge at 210 isnt bad. youre not going to lose any noticeable power... running too cool will do you more harm than good...i run a 180 t-stat, and my engine stays right around 200-205 F and with the a/c on will get a tad higher than that..... i have heard that the e-fan conversions cant keep up with a/c when its hot out...dunno..hope it helps.

I'd use a plasma torch and hack that bastard off right at the
water pump. Hell I might even cut the water pump off too as
long as I was there.
