Subject: electric fan/toggle switch
IP: Logged

Message:
i removed my clutch fan this past winter and am only running the factory electric. Can i just wire a toggle switch to the electric fan and to the battery? Do i need a relay? What does a relay do? Thanks

You could just wire a switch. Make sure to fuse the hot lead close to the battery. If you do it this way, it's up to you to watch that temp gauge and turn your fan on when you need it. You use a relay when you have something like a temp sender. Then the temp sender (when it hits the turn on temp like 200) tells the relay to complete the circuit and make the fan come on. It then breaks the circuit when the engine has cooled enough. I have a sender that comes on at 200 and goes off at 180. That's all the relay does. You can get one at summitracing.com.

A relay does more then that. The fan is going to draw a HUGE amount of current. If you only use a toggle switch, it could cause the switch to burn out and maybe catch fire (happened to a friend with his fog lights)
A relay will send power down to the fan by directly connecting the + side of the battery to the fan.

A toggle switch can turn on a relay (doesn't have to be a temp sender unit (which is just an automatic toggle switch).

Most relays can handle 30Amps of power where most toggle switches can only handle about 10Amps of power.

A relay is simple to hook up.
a 4 pin relay has the needs hooked up as below:
pin 30 - plug this into the + side of the fan
pin 87 - plug into + side of battery (fused)
pin 86 - ground
pin 85 - plug into 1 side of switch

Switch pin 1 goes to pin 85 on relay
pin 2 goes to + side of battery (fused)

On the switch pin 2 can either be constant power (this means that the fan can be turned on at any time) or it can be put on an ignition only power (this means that the ignition

If I splice a switch into my electric fan, will it still kick on when I put the AC on? I was just thinkin about wiring that in so if it got too hot I could kick the fan on, without the AC, but if I wanted to use the AC (which is rare) then I could just kick the AC on and have the fan come on then too.

Yup, You sure can. Just splice it in leaving all of the other wiring in tact.

i spliced into the green wire on the stock electric fan. Then just wired a 30 amp toggle switch. I also wired in a 30 Amp fuse close down by the battery. The fan still turns on with the A/C and works like it has before. Its nice now when i go inside to get my ice coffee i can turn off the engine and just run the electric fan for a minute or two. Later on I may wire in a thermostatic switch, but this is just working out fine for now.

Just remember that if you forget and leave that switch turned on (fan running) with the truck off, it will drain the battery.

Well the electric fan is pretty loud, so hopefully i will not have a brain fart. The fan only is turned on about 10% of the time. Its gonna be in the 90's this week so i'll see how it keeps up without the clutch fan and the stock therm.

I've got a couple Advance Auto stores here in town. I'll see if they have one.

Another question... Where did you mount the heat sensor?

I mounted the sensor in the radiator (be very careful pushing it through the radiator) It will push some of the fins off to the side. You have to be careful not to break them (creating a hole in the radiator)

Its about 3-4 inches below the inlet hose (top of the radiator) and abour 1-2 from the side.

I had to loosen the fan shroud/resevoir to put it in. Then I just ran the wire along the fendor, drilled a bigger hole in the mounting bracket, removed a hood hindge bolt, and then bolted the bracket to the fender using that bolt. I can take some pictures if you want to see it.

I tried three different thermostat units from flex a lite and none
of them worked. Called tech support several times and they
can't figure it out either. That model that has the probe you put
through your radiator fins is pure junk and doesn't work. At
least three of them didn't for me. It only comes on when I turn
on the fan in the passenger compartment for vent air or defrost,
etc. The thermostat will never turn the electric fan on by itself. I
would try permacool or tap into the manifold or radiator and add
your own temp probe. Maybe you could build a T where the
factory temp sensor is behind the alternator but it will be hard to
put a fitting in there.

My probe was supposed to mount behind the radiator but i put it through. Works like a champ. Kicks on at about 200 every time. shuts off just below 195 or so.

I've been using it for over 2 weeks now and my tempature has never gotten higher then when I had my clutch fan on.

I found the switch at Advance Auto. It says 15 Amps. On the fan, it says 30 Amp fuse and it draws 9.8 Amps. Do I need to return this switch for a bigger one?

you should be good. the rating on the switch should be continuous max. if the fan only draws 9.8 you got plenty of room. the 30 amps fuse is in case the fan motor shorts out to ground. 9.8 is probably run current on the fan. what is that model number you got. i am in the need of one of those switches. just removed my clutch fan last week.
