hello i need some info, finally got the money for a V8. Problem is now choosing the year of engine and engine wiring harness? Does anyone out there in dak land have some easy answers for me, or am I S.O.L. I know a newer motor is going to have less mileage and less wear and tear, but will say a 2000 engine harness mesh with the stock wiring of my Dak. By the way if it's not clear yet i have the 3.9 in a 95' 4x4. Any info is going to benifit me greatly and it is well apperciated.

The easiest way would be to get a V8 computer for the engine you get ('92-'95 for 318, '93-'95 for 360---well, actually, a 360 PCM will work for either engine), and tie in two wires for the two extra injectors. 1996 and up is OBDII-land, and that's a mess. If you get a newer engine, just unplug the OBDII wiring, and plug in the OBDI harness (1992-1995)....and don't forget the two extra injector wires.

Need 92-95 - NOT newer
96 and up require more O2 sensors in exhaust
because they do not have EGR.
You might consider a rebuilt engine ?
although you might still require other parts such as thottle body that probably would not be included with rebuilt..

Hmm, EGR. Hadn't thought about that, but if a deal comes along, it's still a lot easier to swap an EGR-related part onto a newer engine (if the longblock price is right)....intakes go for $25 on eBay all the time. Point being, you're not gonna find many low-mileage early models out there, but the older parts will readily fit the newer engines.

Agree. I think you would just need the intake manifold with an EGR port on it. Everything else should be the same. The PCM is going to be looking for EGR and one O2 sensor, and that is going to be on the exhaust.

hey all i just completed a engine swap on my 1990 dak 4x4. it wsed to run the 3.9l guttless wonder and i swapped that for a 1998 5.2l magnum. that i rebuilt with arp main studs and head bolts along with a comp cam and a few other goodies. I started with a 98 mag engine from a van, then visited my local auto recycler and picked up a wiring harness, pcm, and front accessory drive incl. alt, a/c comp,p/s pump.etc because my orig engine was a nonmag (mag and non mag acc. drive are not interchangable)from a 1992 dakota. i deleted the engine fan and installed a electric fan due to space limitations (pre 1991 dak v8 not normally equiped with v8) your stock starter will work and so will motor mounts (not sure with 5.9) i would reccomend a mopar service manual from the dealer (approx $90) it helped me A LOT, i got into trouble where the 50 way bulk head goes through the firewall from the 1990 harness to the 1992 harness there was 12 wires mismatched that i needed to rewire. also you should be okay but in my application going from a tb injection to multi point injection needed a different fuel pressure so i needed to install a different fuel pump assy. also my exhaust needed to be completly redone. the thing runs excellent now the 318 just plays with the truck, and my fuel economy got better....now all i need is a tranny cuz the a500 i had rebuilt one and a half years ago is now slipping......very pissed about that... also if i read correctly you are using your stock std. tranny???? if so you may want to consider that the standard trannys that dak v6's came with was troublesome, howz it gonna hold up with a 5.9L
