One of my friends told me he got a Flowmaster 50 series muffler, then had a shop install it for him and run new stainless steel pipe from the cat back, single in/dual out. Installed it was $160. I was thinking about doing the same, possibly a different muffler. I was thinking 3 inch pipe from the cat to the muffler then what for the dual outs? Stay with 3? I was thinking that it would need to go down to like 2.5 b/c 3 wouldn't have enough pressure. Anyone can clarify?

First, what size engine? 3 inch duals is a heck of a lot, unless you have the 5.9, your going to loose alot of back pressure alone with the 3 inch inlet, even with dual 2.5, it's going to loose torque, which is really important with 2 tons of weight to move... I'd go with a 2.5 inlet, and then 2.5 duals if thats the look you're after.

You're not going to lose torque using a cat-back system behind a catalytic converter. The '92 5.2 I owned had a 3" exit from the converter. I used a 3" entrance/ 2 1/2" dual Flowmaster 70; all it did was run faster. My current '01 4.7 the very same setup; same great results. A free-flow air intake is a must to get the best results from the exhaust.

Go with 2.5 out as 3" will be very pipey

2000 4.7L 4WD. Yea, I looked at Gibsons single outlet, and it was 3 inch pipe. Fig'd I'd stick with 3 inch pipe from the cat to the muffler, then dual 2.5 inch pipes out of the muffler. 01 Motorsport, thats what you got setup? You like the power and sound from it? I was thinkin a Flowmaster 40 series muffler, sumthin deep sounding.

I just talked to the guy at my local shop and he's goin to do a 3 inch/dual 2.5 inch out, and run the tailpipes straight out the back. Flowmaster 40 Series muffler. Altogether installed, $236. Excited? You freakin better believe it!!

I have the Magnaflow 2.5" single in / dual out. Sounds good. Have no idea what the gains were. I think the Part Number is 12158 (aluminized -- but u can get the SS variety). I had a local shop in W. PA put the muffler in, use one of the stock tailpipes, and add a pipe beside the stock one for about $110 -- all aluminized. If you wanted something that would outlast your truck, go with stainless, but expect to pay 2.5 to 3.0 times more. With mine, I wasn't sure if I was gonna like it, or take it off, so I went with aluminized. Hope this helps.

Every time I read the title to this thread,

I think of a true homebrew exhaust, made out of vacuum cleaner pipes or something. I'm LMAO as I type this!

Haha, nah, just meant I wasn't gettin a bolt-on. Well I got my exhaust today, wound up costing me $280 installed with tax and all. Not bad IMO. I love the sound. It's nice and deep while I'm idling, then when I get in the throttle I really can't hear it all that much. I'll update when I really test it on the highway.

When I got the exhaust done on my '02 4.7, they cut the exaust after the cat, and installed a Y-pipe to two tube style performance mufflers and continued the dual out the back. I think the exhaust pipes are 2.5" with 3.5" stainless tips but not sure. What performance difference will this make vs. a single muffler with a dual outlet?
Thanks

the best thing i did on my 99 r/t was i took off the stock ultra flo and added a 3" fully welded ultraflo in its place, a 3' section of 3" pipe, and 1, 2 1/2"-3" reducer and welded it all.
pipe from summit-$12
muffler-$68
smooth reducer-$13
catback exhaust for $93! not too shabby, added some power too!
