Subject: Hi-flow cats, true duals not legal?
IP: Logged

Message:
I went to a local muffler shop and asked them if they could run a 3" pipe from my header y-pipe (2.5" collector) to a 3" Dynomax powercat converter, then 3" all the way back, or do 2 cats, with true duals, all the way back w/ 2.5" or 2.25" pipes. I have a '97 318 Dakota.

They said that they could only replace the cat (it took a crap) with the same type, and that true duals/high flow cats (except for the Magnaflow cats they had in stock, HMMM...) were illegal. They tried to tell me I should put on a Flowmaster cat back, single in/dual out aluminized system ("We've both got it on 'er Rams!) instead. I want all stainless steel, and when one guy fired up his Ram w/the Flowmaster system, it wasn't as lound, aggressive, or healthy sounding as my single in/out 50 series Flowmaster.

I'm pretty sure they are full of it, so what can I do/where can I go to find someone who will work with me? It's not like I want to do anything illegal/ridiculous to my truck. I'm in Lexington, KY if that helps.

I think you got enough clues to find another shop. Muffler shops cannot legally remove a catalytic converter without putting one back, but the size/type/brand can be any (I assume DOT) with suitable catalyst. I had a Catco hi-flow installed on my '92 a few years back. It was physically about half the size of the OEM cat. and worked great; $125 installed at the time. Some muffler shops freak at the mention of anything over 2" pipe, either because of their inventory, or they are just plain lazy to hang larger pipe.

just show up with everything from the pre-cats back in a box. Say you got hung up on some rocks and had to cut your system off. Forget to put your old Cat in the box. Put $50 on the dash and tell them to dual it, and that you will be back in a few hours.

Wrong. A professional cannot go from a single cat to dual; it's illegal. This discussion was on allpar.com recently. The law says that you cannot add dual exhaust to a car that was designed with single, in the emissions era. Do it yourself, but you can't ask a pro to do it - heavy penalties.

I'm leaning towards the single 3" from the headers to the back, but that still doesn't solve the problem of the converter. One of the techs pointed to the Magnaflow box and its ODB II sticker; the Dynomax converter I'm looking at is ODB I & II certified, so I don't know what the problem is. Oh, if only I could weld.

There are a few things:

1. Altering or replacing the cat with less than 80k is illegal under federal laws. Some shops will hold to this and are lible if they do remove or alter the system. Don't go to Midas etc. They won't do it. There are plenty of small shops that will. Look for race shops and performance exhaust shops. Aftermarket cats are easy to come by.

2. You also have to consider how your emission laws are enforced and you inspections. Most areas of the country only will do a visual inspection for a cat. They don't care how many or the configuration i.e. dual. Places such as CA, will verify everything! The correct OEM parts and in the OEM configuration. Any aftermarket parts that impact emissions must have EO numbers.

Two comments about this erroneous post:

It's just as illegal after 80K miles as before.

It's illegal everywhere in the U.S., because it's federal law. Whether your state inspects or not does not change this. You may not get caught, and if you want to take a chance, it's up to you, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still illegal. Those small shops are breaking the law, too.

So if you modify, at least don't lie to yourself about it to rationalize it.

Bob this is a performance performance board. Most of us don't care if its illegal or not. Go back to the emmission board.

Rudeness comes from ignorance.

The original poster did mention the legality, and it needed clarification. No one's forcing you to read the post.

The trouble with this country these days is that no one cares about the law at all. That's why illegals are sucking on the government's tits at our expense.

By the way, go back to 'school school' and learn how to spell emissions, and how not to stutter when typing.

Thanks for the info and input, fellas. My truck has a bit over 90,000 miles right now. There are no emissions checks in Fayette county (Lexington), so that isn't a problem, but I still don't want to throw the guidelines of the law out the window...maybe just skate along the edge of the law. I asked some guys at other automotive shops, and the answer I got was that there really aren't any places in town that will do good custom work, or custom work period. There is one shop that is supposed to be the best of the bunch, so I'm going to give them a try. If they can't, it looks like it's off to technical school for a class in welding.

Im in ill. and we have to take an emision test every 2 years after the vehicle is 2 years old they plug into obc port and stick a probe into the tail pipe,I have a 96 ram 5.9 400hp with true duals, headers, and no cats, it passes every time. ( i run 10% nitro with a full tank of fuel, and it does better than my caravan.I did headers and duals and no cats on my 04 qc 4.7 and runs great! I will let you know in 2 years if it passes. however, if they look under and dont see cats, you could fail. but usually a snot nose honda driving kid is doing the test and he is more intrested in the looks of the truck than doing his job. LUCKY FOR ME! i have 2 nice trucks. i did the exhaust work myself, ( im a plumber) so it was easy. anyone know of a site dedicated to rams only?
I would like to check it out. LATER!
