Subject: Gtech hp - 145 for '99 5.2L 4670lbs

All right, I know to expect drivetrain loss and wind drag and all that, but 145(and about 188ftlbs torque) is just a tad short of 230hp. I had a '94 318 and that tested at about 190 with headers, muffler,k&n,pcm. Everything is stock on the new one except for a k&n fipk and superchips 87octane flash. Am I missing something. I thought buying a newer truck would be a good thing.

I double checked my weight and it's good. Gears are the 3.55. Would that make any difference? I even tested it with another g-tech(which I have for sale, btw), and got the same reading.

I agree 145 from 230 seems like way too much driveline loss.
Do you have the prometer or the cheapy one? If you have the
pro did you calibrate the RPMs correctly? Did you input redline
correctly? Did you input the weight correctly? If yes, how about
mounting it to the windshield. Is it secure and mounted firmly?
As long as you accounted for all the weight correctly including
gasoline and driver weight I can't see what could be wrong.
Your weight is almost identical to mine with gasoline and junk in
the bed. I'm going to post times and all that info soon.

Gears have nothing to do with horsepower and torque if they did
the gtech would ask you for that ratio.

I tried it with both my old pro and the new competition model. The hp came out the same with both. I weighed my truck two different times to be sure - 4670 with me and full tank of gas.

I calibrated the rpms - they're good. Redline is OK, too. Being mounted wrong would have given me a margin of error when I tested the two at the same time.

There are only 60,000mi on the truck and nothing apparent wrong with it. It really kinda sucks. Maybe when I put all my parts on(r/t heads, m1, 1.7rr, headers, 3" exhaust, tb) I'll take care of whatever the problem is. Maybe I should do a compression check before I do the heads, though. That might possibly tell me something. 20% driveline loss would put a dak at about 180hp. It would take quite a bit to lose the extra 35hp, wouldn't it? ...plugged cat, muffler maybe?

When I do the run, I just floor it in 1st until it shifts and then back off. It gives me consistent results. The manual recommends 2nd gear for hp, but with an auto trans it's kinda hard. I used the same method for my old truck, too. That one was at about 180.

You're using a G-tech? As far as I know, those just measure your RWHP. You need to find the numbers for that. Such as my 2000 4.7L has 235 hp stock. That transfers to like 176 hp I believe. It's something like 25%. That's the real wheel hp. You only are gettin the 230 at the cam.

Yes, I understand that. I should be real close to the 176hp you're getting. 145 and 175 are not very close.

True, that would tell me for sure. Of course, that's why I bought the gtech. Nothing ever works like you think it will...

There should also be a setting on the G-tech, ummm I think it was called the HP factor or sumthin like that. I had the Escort one, there was a setting you could change if it was giving you the wrong number. So, by changing the HP Factor, you bring that 145 up to 176. So the G-tech is set correctly. This is why I got rid of mine. I wasn't sure it was setup correctly and reading accurately, lol.
