Subject: Removing 3rd Cat 4.7 - Your 2 Cents
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm planning on removing my Third Cat. Putting in a straight pipe. I live in Detroit and have a guy that will do this for me for about $15. We don't have emissions here, and no one checks for cats.

My question is simply this... I have a 02 4.7 4x2 CC Dak, will this affect my computer? Will this cause a dash light to come on? Will I gain any power?

No flames just honest answers will do, perhaps even alternate suggestions but back up what you say with facts please. Thank guys!

No,no,might see close to 5 hp. Sounds like a great price ! The sensors are on the precats, nothing on the third cat to cause a problem.

I was crawling around underneath my 2004 4.7 CC 4x4 last night, and noticed that I only have 2 cats, one off each exaust manifold. The pipes then join at a Y, and go straight back to the muffler. Does anybody else have this? I live in Ontario, Canada.

Honest answer: It's illegal to remove the cat, punishable by a $2,500 fine. You takes your chances, if caught, don't cry about it. If your friend is a pro, he can face a much higher fine.

In some states there are no emission laws. We know already about the fines. We just want to know about the performance gains. This is the reason for it being posted in a performance forum. Anyone else delete the 3rd cat, gut it, or replace it with a high flow?

I removed my 3rd Cat a while back and the power increases were not real noticeable in my 4X4 4.7. The bottleneck in the Dakota / Durango exhaust system is at the Y pipe and the stock muffler, not at the 3rd Cat. It is one of about 7 cheap mods that can be done for our trucks (180* t-stat, homebrew intake, moved air temp sensor, dremel tooled throt body, removing the rubber flap, removed clutch fan, etc.), but in the end you get what you pay for.

The problem I ran into with the install was that I replaced the cat with a straight pipe and a bit of flex hose from Pep Boys... and the flex hose leaked a bit. There is a bend right after the cat in the pipe that goes over the transmission crossmember that is a challenge to work with.

The 3rd Cat is the workhorse of the 3. It is bigger and is made to meet and exceed California emmissions, but I beleive that the 2 cats will do the job. I'll find out in August when my Texas inspection is due. I agree with Bob on his comment about your friend the pro. Those guys can get royally screwed for removing a stock emmissions device.

FYI- 6 months after removing my 3rd cat, I went for true duals (with only 2 cats) and THAT is where the performance boost is.

Whatever you do, let us know how yours turns out.

Okay once again.... There are NO emission laws in Michigan. None... zero... zilch. No emission testing! Our cars are fitted with enough equipment to pass emission testing everywhere except CA, but there are no laws saying they have to stay that way! The federal emissions standards have no impact on our motoring in the Michigan area.

Okay, now that I got that out of the way again...

Has anyone else done this? Can you speak up and let us know how this has worked out. My deadline is Saturday, and I will have made up my mind by then but I need some input. If I go ahead with this anyway, I will let you know, and let you guys know how it worked for me.

A few more sidelights:

1. Make sure you attach a new hanger on the straight pipe, or it will bang against the crossmember. The Cat hangs off a rubber deal attached to the Transmission.

2. Ask yourself why you are cutting out the cat.

If you are doing it to get power, you won't get much.

If you are doing it for the sound, you would be better off with a new muffler. The only sound improvement will be if you don't get a solid seal around your pipe fittings.

It won't effect the computer, so you won't get any dash lights.

3. As I said earlier, the choking point in the Dakota exhaust is the Y PIPE. The design flaw and restriction is upstream of the 3rd cat.

It doesn't mean squat that you have no emissions testing in your state. Tampering with any emissions control is a federal crime, regardless of whether there is testing. It just means you may not get caught. Go ahead and do it - just with the knowledge that it is a felony.

Opie, the Texas/Houston check for late model vehicles is not a sniffer test. They plug into the OBD-II port and check for codes. If you are not throwing any codes, you will pass.

I have had an inspection station look under the truck on my 94 dodge ram and notice an exhaust leak. If they are going to look, they will see that something has been changed between the Y and the muffler.

As for me, I will continue to be a cheerleader for the GS Motorsports True Dual or a good cat-back.

What the hell is this smog on which they speak? I see the Eco-Nazis are on the prowl again. The metro Detroit Area is one of the fastest growning hi-tech industrial zones in the country. The EPA will ruin our local economy by forcing EPA pollution standards on small business that cannot afford to take these measures. If you ever wondered why america doesn't have a steel industry anymore, blame the EPA. If you've ever wondered why all the minimum wage jobs in factorys have gone away, blame the EPA. Its absolutely retarded behaviour to enforce these problems. We have no SMOG in the metro area, and the air is clean and as pure as can be. Most pollution comes floating across from canada anyway.

Now You asked for it - JACKASS
You want to REMOVE your CAT and
INCREASE POLLUTION ?????
You are NOT going to GAIN anything else
and May well mess up your truck.....
There is a SENSOR somewhere after that CAT which
measures it for performance
NO cat = FAIL = computer turns UP the FUEL..
IF companies can't AFFORD CLEAN then they
DON'T NEED to be in business.........
IF YOU researched it - many have the BUCKS
They just like to give it to the CEO
instead of CLEANING up their ACT................

The only thing stock on my '02 Dak exhaust are the exhaust manifolds and the precats. After the precats are 2.50" pipes back to a dual in/dual out Gibson with dual tail pipes to the rear bumper. Opie is exactly right about the restrictive stock 'Y' pipe.
Mr Sleepy I start the same way you are by just getting rid of the 3rd cat, a little while later I got a performance muffler, a little while later I got a bigger 'Y' pipe, a little while later I went with true dual where I'm at now. If I had to do all over again, I would have done true duals from the get go.
Just my 2 cents hope it helps someone trying to decide what to do.

Later...
