i dont know why they dont all have the same speedometer drive. That was just something chrysler did.

early years were cable drive, then they had a electronic sensor with a gear in the tailshaft. 98 and newer have a ring that attaches to the carrier in the rear end.

All the 5.2's, 5.9, and 3.9's share the same transmission bellhousing bolt pattern. The 727 would bolt up. The only thing to look at is the torque converter. The 5.2 and 3.9 are internally balanced so you would need a torque converter that isnt balanced while the 5.9 is externally and would required the appropriate weights.

The first overdrives had the gear driven speedo with cable drive, as well as an electronic sensor for the computer. The Magnum-equipped trucks went to the electric speedo, but still had the gear drive for the sensor. In 1996, the gear drive speed sensor went away in all models (it was already being phased out in some models), as did the hole in the case to mount the sensor. The 727 will bolt up, but typically, is about 4 inches shorter than the overdrive units. Definitely stick with the pre-'96 trannies. 1996 and up require computer controls for all functions.

i dont know how the small block 727 compares to the big block 727 but the big block 727 is less than 2" shorter than the 42re.

The aforementioned HD clutches, etc, can also be put in the smallblock 727.

Its the 904 tranny that's significantly shorter. Another difference between small and big block 747s would be the bellhouse. Intense Dak knows so much because of experience...

i dont know about the factory stall for the 727's but putting a small block converter on the big block 727 would raise your stall speed.

i know the 727 is 2" shorter because i measured them. And because the back of the big block sits 2" further back than the back of the 3.9, my stock driveshaft fit and all i had to do was buy a new yoke and u-joint.

friggin u-joint was more friggin expensive than the slip yoke... and i already broke it. frock!
