any one know what keeps the pulley on afterwards? I was taknig mine off, and was getting curious as to whether I had to reinstall a nut to keep the pulley in place.. it LOOKS secure, but don't want it flying off while I;m driving!

Okay, I located info that says the pulley is pressed on to the pump, but still worried that a stiff jar from a pot hole might loosen it....any info would be great from people that have removed their clutch fan....I live in Miami, and haven't heard that fan go into operation forever, so I;m glad to be rid of it, just worried about tossing my belt and pulley down the street!

Well I've been driving two months now without my clutch fan and
the pulley hasn't flown through the hood yet and I fly over speed
bumps all the time.

hehe... yeah, I just got nervous seeing that big nut holding down, I've been around all day without the fan, and am really pleased with the responsiveness, NOT a bit concerned about the pulley coming off at all now.

so you guys are just removing the clutch fan alltogether and not replacing it with an aftermarket electric fan? what if i have to sit idle in traffic for a while or something, wont things get a little too hot? can that a/c compressor fan be used as the primary cooling fan? just looking for some info, i hate the clutch fan on my 02 3.9, especially right when i start it up and have to listen to it.

Yank it off, racer X! the thing to remeber is that most cars (front wheel drive) don't even have an engine driven fan.. on the dak's it's more of an 'extra insurance' thing....or 5 pounds of drag on your belt drive... depends on your perspective!
Mines a 01 5.9L R/T, and I live in South Beach.. traffic here is a BITCH> tourists all over the place. the 'a/c compressor fan" you're talking about is actually just the same electric fan that all cars come with...it's set to kick on at 220... PLUS if you just turn on your a/c, even wihtout the compressor running,(set to a cool tep setting at your dash) the fan is set to run to keep air moving over the core. I've had mine off a few days, and whenever I getinto traffic, I just hit the a'c button, to kick on the fan. Another thing to remeber, when you're running at 40mph plus, the natural airflow does MORE than both fans do together. the pulley is pressed on, so it's fine by itself, without a nut, as I'm sure you've read above.
You may want to switch to the 180 thermostat as a precaution; I have one in my truck. I haven't noticed ANY difference in operating temp since removing the fan, and it's been about 85 degrees out here lately. I haven't even heard the electric fan kick on by itself.

BTW I am loving the fact that the damned "Roar" is gone during start-up!!! gained about five hp estimate, RPM's build up faster, better takeoff...etc...

my mods....180 thermo, K&N FIPK w/ 9inch conical filter (s hook bolt for top hat), IAT sensor relocation, TPS adjusted to .7v, auxilliary trans cooler package, thermo fan removed (obviously), polished throttle body, accell brass cap and rotor, autolite 3923 sparkplugs, silver side stipes from ( www.totacc.com/user/glenzoni/ ), removed stock decals added durango style "5.9 R/T" silver emblems (3 at $40 a piece!!) and machined aluminum "R/T" pedal set.

next is an M-1 intake, tranny shift kit, Hotchkiss lowering performance suspension, Chrome Rims, 52mm throttle body, Crower roller rockers and valve springs, and, of course, a 150 shot of nitrous....thinking of doing the Cuda style exhaust, and the shaker hood.
hehe....I just wanted to rant about my truck a bit... sorry.

When I took my cluctch fan off yes I replaced it with another fan. An electric fan. Personally I wouldn't drive without some kind of fan on but that's just me. I bought a black magic 150 fan. I needed to fabricate brackets to mount the thing and have been through 3 of their crappy adjustable thermostats which don't work. I have my fan spliced into the a/c power line so when I turn on the fan in the passenger compartment the radiator fan will come on.

I just became aware that not all daks come with an electric fan (I'm shocked!!) yeah, you'd need SOME kind of fan, black magics are alright, kinda noisy, and yeah, you have to fab brackets... here's a thought, get the R/T electric fan, and install that.... if it's good enough to cool a 5.9 then its gotta be good enough for the 3.9 and the 5.2.....

Keep in mind this is on an R/T, but Ithink they're all the same...
uh, its a bit of a pain...the painful part is getting the right size wrench...its either a 36mm or 1-7/16.... I ground out an 'extra' 1-1/4 wrench I had...(ever ground on hardened steel? its a bitch!)hehe

okay, once you get a wrench on the sucker, hit it with as big a friggin hammer you can...a sledge hammer is no good, but a carpenters hammer is too light...I used a 5 lb hammer...otherwise it'll just spin the pulley. you gotta hit it towards the passenger side, from the drivers side. I've heard of a way to "lock" the pulley with a screw driver... I wouldn't recommend it, as you might bend the pulley if you wack it too hard, or worse you may crack your water pump....

Mine took three hard whacks, then spun free by hand. it was a bit difficult to wiggle it out on my 5.9, but you should have plenty of room to pull it out on you 3.9....JUST DONT DROP IT INTO YOUR elec fan/ radiator, its heavy enough to crack the fan, put a decent hole in your radiator!

As long as you have an electric fan in there you'll be "cool"!

Here is what I did to remove it. I got a 1 7/16" wrench put it on the nut and hit it with your typical hammer. Hit it from right to left as your standing in front of the radiator. Two hits was all it took for me ( I did put some WD40 on the nut) and it came right off. You need to take the shroud out with it at the same time as there isn't enough room to get them seperately. If you use WD40 take extra care not to get any of it on the belt or any surfaces the belt comes in contact with.

yeah, thats why I avoided the WD40, didn't want to get any on the belt, I slid mine to the right, and yanked it out while I held the shroud/washerfluid thing towards the front of the radiator support. I didn't remove it cause I was lazy....hehe... Itried the reg hammer, but again, I didn't spray wd40, so I swapped tp the 5 lb hammer.... automotive proverb-"IF it won't come loose, hit it wit a bigga hamma!" :)

I think the website for those pedals is www.racepedals.com but it doesn't seem to be working right now, I got em about a year ago.... still "hunting" their machined Billet aluminum...if I can't find the site, I'll get some pics downloaded to email to ya...
