are there any free/cheap mods for the 4.7 dakota. I already know about relocating the IAT but I have an IAT adjuster off of my old 318.

remove rubber flap next to the radiator and remove the snorkel piece of the factory intake (if you still have the factory intake that is)

After you remove the rubber flap and snorkel, pick up a Fernco 4"/4" "no-hub" fitting from Home Depot or Lowe's for about $7, and clamp it onto the snout of the stock air box with the hose clamp provided. Now you have a super little air catcher ala "Ram Air". You WILL feel the difference. Next, get a K&N drop-in, homebrew tubes to the throttle body, and freer-flowing exhaust to compound your efforts.

Recently purchased an '03 Dak quad and have been faithfully reading the posting on this website to find out what I can do to improve performance without spending too much $$. To my surprise the previous owner put a K@N drop filter in it and I discovered today the 'tornado' intake insert which I quickly took out. I did my first mod today which was removing the factory intake snorkel and the rubber flap next to the radiotor. BTW - both very easy mods, only required removing one bolt that held the factory air box in place. After driving around town I didn't feel any gains but read that the Fernco 'no-hub' will help direct the air (Ram effect). My only concern is will debri/rain build up in the box? I could see how the filter could become saturated if driving in a rain storm. I appreciate your feedback, great website!!
My next mod will be ABS Pipe to throttle body.

The drain holes in the air box should handle any water before it gets to the filter. In the winter just put the flap back if you want, as you will be getting plenty of cold air anyway.

This may sound stupid, but what do you mean by relocating the IAT sensor, and what exactly is the TPS mod?

I also wanted to know what the no hub fitting did? Why not just leave the air box with nothing on the snorkel section?

Relocating the Incoming Air Temperature sensor closer to where the air comes in will(it is cooler there)richen the air fuel ratio=more power. The no-hub thing prevents you from just sucking in hot air from the engine compartment, that snorkel is there for a reason(cooler air by the fender wall). The hotter air will also be sensed by the IAT and lean you out even more compounding the problem.

The Throttle Position Sensor can be modified for an off idle stumble condition, just do a search on "off idle stumble".(I wouldn't bother unless you notice it)

Oh ok. That makes more sense to me now. I searched for TPS and IAT, but it never explained what they were. Thanks. The fitting though, is it just a straight piece? or does it curve? I did a search on Home Depot and they came up with a straight piece of pipe. So it just clamps on and points out towards the grill?

I guess, never did this mod myself, but thats where you want it to go. I`d say as close as you can to where the flap is removed. Take a look in your engine bay,if it looks like a straight shot will do it,then do it. Search here for home brew intake, cold air intake, cold air mod,etc....

I tried the TPS mod and immediately changed it back. It turns out that dimes with a hole drilled through them don't make for very good washers. I tightened the screws down too much, the sensor stuck in "wide open" mode and threw a code. This mod can be done correctly if you follow the directions and have a torque wrench.

The IAT sensor move just made me run a bit richer, but in this recent oil crisis, it isn't the best thing by itself. Until you have a few other mods done to benefit from the relocation, just wait.

I changed to Autolite plugs and now am idleing a little rougher than with the old Champions. I did this change at the same time as the 180 t-stat, so I don't know if the plugs contributed to my 4.7L running cooler.

I did the 180 t-stat change and (with the plugs) am running a lot cooler than before (but not so cool that I build up sludge).

I have not removed the clutch fan because I am in Houston and don't see the logic in removing a fan when I will be driving in 100* traffic. Go for it if you live north of the Mason Dixon line. Cheap, fast, easy 4 hp.

I am currently boreing out my throt body with a dremel tool to open it up and breathe better with my homebrew intake. This is not an exact science, but is cheaper (free) than a fastman right now.

These along with the homebrew intake made of PVC are the cheapest mods you can do on your 4.7. Anything else (like a Superchips computer when it comes out mid-may, True Dual exhaust, headers, intake manifold, Fastman Throt Body, Cams, etc.) is going to start costing you $100+ per mod.

Good luck!

Another stupid question, this rubber flap I hear so much about, I don't see where ya'll are talkin about. Is it in front of the airbox next to the radiator? B/c theres only some metal thing with fins directly in front of my airbox bolted to the body. Sits about 6 inches away from the intake. I dun see any rubber flap.

You are correct in the location where you would find the infamous rubber flap. What year, etc. is your Dak?? I have a '95 which had a solid piece of plastic there, I removed it in the same manner though. I have also removed this rubber flap from all my families Dodge trucks: '99 Ram, '03 Dak, '03 Durango, '04 Durango. The purpose is to keep a monsoon amount of rain from entering the engine bay. I have never had an issue w/ water or foreign objects entering my engine though. The grill keeps all large objects from entering. Good luck!

You people!!
The stock intake is already a cold air intake. The rubber flap is there to protect your A/C lines and engine compartment from road debris. Change simply for the sake of change is not smart. Why not remove your entire grill so your engine compartment gets more cold air? Oh yeah, you'd get rock holes through your radiator. 'Ram Air' from a 3" inlet? please!! Maybe at mach 2!!

Think before you jump. If there's not at least a 2% gain (about 5hp in the case of the 4.7) then there's no point. It takes at least 10% before you actually can feel it*. How much time effort and risk are you willing to spend for this unproven mod? Even with all of the mods suggested here you are only talking about a COMBINED gain of about 2%. How much did you hurt your truck's resale value for that 2% that you can't even feel and only improves your 1/4 mile time by a tenth second or so?

*Proven through scientific double blind testing. The drivers in this study, both professional and average consumers, could only reliably identify vehicles that had at least a 10% increase in power. Anything less and they were wrong at least 50% of the time with their 'butt dyno'. Wish I could remember which of the big 3's marketing dept did this so I could lay hands on the study again.
