 Subject: What's the best 4-wheel drive setup?

What is the best setup for a 4 wheel drive with a whole lot of power? (supercharged 360 or 408) I need a trany and transfer case that can handle that much hp. I read on another posting bout' a dude taking off in four wheel drive for traction then switching into two wheel around second or third. Is that safe for the 4wd?
