so that they can trap the dirt, cotton gauze is very porous
compared to the paper air filters so it needs a clinging agent

Its also believed that a small film of dirt trapped in the K/N also helps filtration. I let mine go quite a while w/o cleaning.

Not to be a smart a$$ but oil doesn't really "dry" on the filter. What happens is that the oil is absorbed into the cotton filter material. The cotton has a microscopic weave that lets air through but traps any particles trying to pass through. The oil helps to hold these particles and as it builds up it is supposed to actually filter better.

The oil is what traps the dirt, the cotton simply holds the oil in place. This is the reason why K&N's are washable. Paper filters are fine enough to capture dirt but cant be washed, they fall about when soaked. The oil acts like a liquid paper filter attached to the cotton, when the oil gets too dirty you just wash it away. For $50 you buy a drop-in K&N air filter and actually begin to save money within a year. Most K&N Recharger kits/Cleaner kits, are $15-25 depending on where you shop. The kit will last the life of the filter.
