Here's a break down of the numbers.....

255= tread width= 255mm= (255/25.4)= 10.04" wide

55= aspect ratio= 55% of the tread width or (10.04 x 0.55)= 5.52" (This is the height of the side walls)

17= wheel diameter.

Tire diameter = 17 + (2 x 5.52") = 28.04"

The aspect ratio is the key number to calculating the tire diameter. Just multiply the aspect ration by the tread width. Then multiply that answer by 2 and add that answer to the wheel diameter.

Hope that helps.

The stock diameter (255/55/17) R/T tire is 28" tall. If you come close to a 1" variation in tire height, the speedometer and gear ratio will be affected slightly. Taller will slow the speedo and make a gear ratio higher (lower numerical). Find some cross-reference charts for the diameter you are seeking, like on the Tire Rack site. 295/50/17 comes out to 29", for example. The first number is the "relative sizing" (I can't recall the exact term). The second is the aspect ratio, in this case, the tread width is 55% of the tire height. Third is the rim diameter. Tire also have speed ratings, like "S","T" or "V", treadwear (higher # is longer wear), and temperature/ traction ratings (A is best). If you are looking for a good 255/55/17 replacement, check out the Michelin LTX Pilot.

275/50-17 makes a nice replacement size. Same height, and the wider tire looks nice.

01 motor sport you mixed up the aspect ratio its 55%of the width is the hight and the firts number is the section width not the tread width the tire is normaly wider then the tread area
