Subject: My Bad Mileage- Update!
IP: Logged

Message:
Well its been a long time since I posted about my horrible mileage drops and my apologies to anyone who might still care about it.

I got some free time and decided to do an experiment, but before I tell you heres a little reminder about my truck and problem.

2002 V8 4.7 4x2 Club Cab 3.55, Mods - K&N FIPK2, Jet stage 1 chip, Gibson split rear cat back. Averaged 23.5 MPG on first trip out with truck. Averaged 18mpg on mixed street and highway driving. Drove like a stole the thing. First winter 17mpg on average. Never recovered the from the mileage drop. Second winter 14.5 mpg on average, stayed there until present day.

Well I tested tested the cat and it was not clogged. Haven't touched the o2 sensors. Drove like a complete grandpa never exceeding 2k rpm on acceleration and was pasted a thousand times and given plenty of middle fingers as well. Never took it past 65 on the freeway. Averaged 17 mpg.

The real question is this.... If I have to drive the truck like honda to get 17, when I used to get 18 driving like a madman, what could possibly be wrong?

I'm pulling the Jet chip on Friday and filling up to the top and will try another tank of grandpa mode to see if it helps. Will keep you posted.

Thanks for reading this is your still with me... I know you people are tired of mileage posts but im not whining im just wondering whats wrong with my truck since nothing has changed and im steadily losing mileage.

I'm curious myself. One of the reasons I got rid of my 4.7L is that I was only getting 1.5-2mpg better than my R/T. I experienced the same thing. I started out at 19.5mpg and it fell slightly to 18mpg by 8k. Then at aroung 12K it fell to 15mpg. I was averaging 13.7mpg with my R/T.

99 Dak, I dont know what that is... could you explain?

BillyBob - Thought of that and went the extra step of having a tune up done less than 5k ago, the truck has 41k on it currently. The mechanic said that the plugs look decent and could have gone another 10-15k.

BTW, I don't use synthetics, but I do use quakerstate and regular mobile oil now and then. I use gas treatments about every 5k to keep the water and buildup off my injectors and plugs. I plan on topping the tank off today and will pull the jet chip as well. If this makes a difference I will be surprised because the mileage drop happened well before I added the chip.

Oh another thing...

My truck has developed a new problem, a rough idle. Ever since it rolled off the showroom floor the truck has idled at 700-750 rpms. But for over a year now it would idle at 500 and the meter would move slightly, dipping then seemingly recover just before it wanted to stall. The dealer told me they replaced the idle motor, but the problem never went away. Could this be related? I don't know... but I would love to find out. Keep in mind that this idle problem happens more frequently and is about 2 out of every 3 red lights these days. Tapping the gas sends the rpms back to where it should be.

If nothing else works take it to a shop with a diagnostic scanner - will tell you if sensor voltages, etc. are within spec.

My truck idled like that with the a/c off with the stock plugs and also with the autolite 3923's. I recently switched to NGK regular copper plugs. No idle problems any longer.

As far as mileage...I have 50K miles in my '00 4.7L 2wd and my milage is unchanged from when I bought it new. Even with mods. I average 14-16 in the city. And 18-21 on the highway. I just upgraded wheels and tires from 235/65-15's on 15x7 wheels to 255/55-17's on 17x9 r/t wheels. Who knows what that will change, probably nothing at all. I'm also putting a tonno-cover on it today. Most people have boasted a 1mpg increase from the cover.

My other mods include:
4" Z-tube
70mm BBk TB
2.5" Carsound Cat
2.5" in/out Magnaflow
180 t-stat

Future mods:
GS Motorsports true duals w/ magnaflows instead of spintechs. I don't like loud.
Hurst shifter
HO Cams and '03 intake maybe.

My brother had the same problem with his truck about a three years ago and took it to every dodge dealership and no one could find out why it was idling irradically. He finally took it to a dodge dealership around the Ft. Stewart area and they found the problem was wires going to the idle position sensor. Also you can remove the idle position sensor and spray some kind of cleaner where it slides onto the TB. Let it dry throughly then reconnect it and start it up and see if that helps. if you live in a dusty area the contacts may be filthy.

Hop Cap, A cap made by the Hop Company... has a trashy looking female bunny for a logo. Sexy cap has contoured lines on the roof that accents the top of the truck well. Some people call them toppers but I call it a cap guess its the ole soda/pop debate.

Pwasson - I just did what you said and I will let you know if it worked. Thanks for the tip. TB was filthy as hell.
