"That would cut into President Bush's oil profits, if everyone started going 6K to an oil change instead of 3K."

Many people could do that now and still use buck-a-quart dino, the 3K myth needs to go away.

aj - don't be afraid, you just need to look at the big picture. The whole package has been engineered for better performance (tighter tolerances that allow less blowby, and smoother running parts withoout power wasting slop that work well with 5w30 oil). the oil is just part of the picture; not completely the way to meet EPA standards in and of itself.

99dak,
Back in the 70's, the owners manual on most cars called for 12K oil changes and they said you could go further than that if most or all of your miles were interstate/highway miles. Then one day we woke up in the 80's and it was burned in stone that you had to change your oil every 3K. My dad still changes his oil once a year and that's if I remind him. He has 240,000 miles on is 1993 Ram right now.

I prefer to keep fresh oil in there myself, but I figure the 3K oil change is B.S. Especially with todays cleaner running engines. Most of the oil contamination is from blow-by getting past the rings. Todays engines have almost no blow-by which would allow you to go further on an oil change. It's just one more example of special interest groups (oil companies) raping America.

Sludge, however, is produced by oil-viscosity break down. Break down occurs from heating the oil up and cooling it down. This plays a large role in why in town miles are so hard on the engine. Lots of varied RPMs=varied oil temps. Also the engine gets turned on and off a lot when running errands around town.
Lots of people never change their transmission oil either. Doesn't mean it's going to stop working. Just means it won't work as efficiently as it would if it was maintained properly.
Give me a break, just because one person doesn't change their oil, and gets away with it, doesn't mean we can all stop changing our oil regularly.

Most late model owners manuals say 7500mi for normal service, 3000mi for severe. All I'm saying is many (if not most) vehicles don't fall into the severe service category.
