i was goin to buy a new intake for my lil 4cyl dakota the other day, but i didn't want to spend the $175 until i was sure it would make a noticeable improvement. I was wondering if i just took off the air box and ran it like that for a little bit(an hour or so) would it mess anything up. I know if dirt or water get in it's bad trouble but will this be a good comparison to a new intake? Also, will my engine run crappy becasue their is no resistance in the air flow?
Also, what other upgrades are good to start off with, i have a 98 Dakota CC 2.5L and need a little more speed and acceleration. I know it will never be fast, so don't give any smart comments please.
Any comments are appreciated.

I don't know much about the 2.5l, but I do know that all genIII Daks come with the same airbox/filter, so if it's big enough for the V8 (or at least Dodge thinks so), I can't imagine it's too restrictive for the 4cyl. Cold air might help, but you don't need to spend $175 for that. If you want to make a CAI yourself for a couple of bucks just do a search - lots of how-tos about it on this forum.

My CAI fell off, for I don't know how long. I think it was after a mud run. Anyhooo...taking off the air box assembly may not be the best way to test it, but I ran mine for at least a little while with no filter and it didn't hurt it, but it could be a risky test.
