What is a mid sized truck? Dakota defined the term with the Gen I. Chevy is calling its Colorado a mid size on their current ads, yet its little diffrent than the old S-10. The Frontier and Tacoma claim to be small trucks, but are only a hair diffrent in size. The Tundra claims to be a full size, but I'm not sure why, its only 400 lbs. heavier and has a long bed like the Dak used to have. The Silverado 1500 short bed weighs the same as the Tundra and carries less load than the Dak and won't actually tow anymore. What are your thoughts and why the is the 2005 Dak getting bigger anyway??

I think it's based on towing and payload ratings.

To me, it's not a full sized truck unless you can fit a 4'x8' sheet of plywood flat in the bed between the wheel wells. If you have to drop the tailgate, that would be a full size short bed.
The mini trucks are lighter and also have lower bed rails - not only is the box narrower, but it's not as tall either.
The Dakota is a true mid size, with a tall box and a substantial feel to it. Use your own best judgement to decide what the pretenders really are.
I'd use size rather than payload ratings, since in some ways a Dakota is more rugged than a full size half ton. For example, when I bought in 2000, the Dakota front end was rated at 3600 lbs. - beefier than the full size half ton Ram; this meant I could run a snow plow that I couldn't on the full size half ton. But it's still a mid size truck; that doesn't make it any bigger.

I agree about the bed rails. Ever look at a Toyota? it would barely hold a six pack without it tipping over the side on corners.

On the bedwall issue. The new F150 has walls so high you can't access anything over the side. The Titan is almost a direct copy too. I'm talking about the 4x4's, we don't have many 4x2's around here.

The plywood sheet gage makes sence to me. Its about as good as any measure. The little Dak will outwork most of them anyway.
