I just love it when this happens. Seems kind of odd that everyone is saying that the tacoma won't have any torque. Cause this dyno comparrison says different.

http://www.trucktrend.com/roadtests/pickup/163_0208_fun/index4.html

It's a fun article to read. The Dodge does pretty well considering it's not the fastest.
Ya know, I like the Dakota and all. But, why do some people feel like they have to defend their vehicle of choice. Geez, atleast do some research before you go blindly saying stuff about a vehicle you know nothing about. I suspect since the tacoma in the article is only rated at 251HP. It doesn't have as much torque as the 300HP version.

That was good article in Motor Trend. I thought the R/t was rather impressive to hang with turbo's. The times they posted weren't very good compared with alot I've seen for 4.7's and R/t's on this site. Trd is basicly after market like a Kenne Bell on a 4.7. How do you boost guys compare to the Lightnings and the TRD? My AWD 4.7 is almost as fast as that R/T. You'll also notice they didn't give in tow or hauling numbers for any of them. None of them are set up to work.

The main difference (and important to some) is that the TRD will not void the original warranty on the vehicle.

I'm not really defending my r/t but when's the last time you went out cruising or to the track and seen ANY Toyota truck being competitive? A true Toyota with a Toyota motor? From my point of view,as far as trucks go, the Toyotas are not a threat when it comes to racing on the street or at the track. Whens the last time you actually saw with your own eyes a Toyota running lower than 14.0? C'mon man, they're just not comparable in this area.

Is it just me or do the dyno numbers of the R/T look very strange? 154hp and 200 lbs trq at the wheels seems rather low to me considering what some people on here have put down in stock trim. Even though the dyno numbers seem low and it wasn't a r/c, it still pulled a respectable mid 15.

The Tacoma isn't a bad truck. A friend of mine traded in his 2001 Silverado 1500 (4.8L) for a 2004 extended cab Tacoma with an auto. Granted, the Chevy "feels" much faster with its abundant torque but this truck does feel peppy even with its 3.4L. By no means is it a speed demon but it does have enough oomph to get out of its own way. It could use more hp and trq naturally but it still makes good with what it has. Put the hp/trq aside because this truck will run forever!

It actually seems to me that the TRD should run faster than the 14.9 that it does in the article. The power to weight ratio tells me so. One of the problems that the Toyota suffers from is lack of weight in the rear. Now, we all know this about PU trucks in general. The Toyota has a lighter rear than other trucks of the same size due to the shallow depth of the bed. Which, I believe they are or have adressed on the newer models since this article. Not, sure about the facts on that though. My point is that I think that a better balanced TRD tacoma might run nearer 14 in the 1/4. Not to mention if they come out with the 300hp version on a better balenced rig. That 10lb per hp should be enough for less than 14 technically speaking.
For some the TOY is impractical (size). But, for those claiming that it won't have the TQ or otherwise just don't know how to put 2(power) and 2(weight) together (ratio). It's just childish banter that's all to common on the net.
Sometimes you just have to put some facts in there face so you can have a civilized or intelligent conversation.
It's pretty hard to dispute the three vehicles tested on the same dyno on the same day. Especially since they all run average numbers in the 1/4 for their model. I wouldn't think that that's the best performing stock R/T ever made. But, I know better than to think the same about the other two as well.

JC-

To be honest with you Ive never seen stock r/t numbers that low. About a year back I did see an r/t pull a 170rwh at a local dyno. I later found out that it had a blown head gasket prior to the run. My '99 rc r/t with cold air,jba headers, jet chip 1 and a 160deg t-stat got 233rwhp & 298rwt. Most stock r/ts have 200-210rwhp & 280-290rwt that Ive seen.

Just wait until Dodge comes out with an SRT-8 Dak with a Hemi in it (you know they will) to replace the current r/t, and see how they compare then:)

Hope so

That would be cool for sure. I just hope that the next model looks at least as good as current gen3 models. I also hope they put the Hemi in and there will be an aftermarket too. Hemi is great, but give us a selection of mods to choose from...

Hope so-

I just received the new Motor Trend, and as of now there are no plans to offer a Hemi in the new Dakota. The only choices will be a new 3.7 V6 or the 4.7 V8. The truck will be here in October, but I'm guessing it won't even be a year before Dodge's PVO team drops a Hemi in one. Only makes sense, you know:)

Oh, and I'm definitely with you on the whole aftermarket support deal. Everyone makes tons of products for the S-10, Silverado, F-150, etc, but almost nothing for the Dakota. Really don't know why, when lots of people have them and the aftermarket supports the Ram, although not as much as the aforementioned trucks.

I think that most people are satisfied with the performance of their Dakota. That is probably why there isn't as much support for them.
The Dakota weighs more than 500lbs less than the full size pick-ups. It is available with an engine comparable to the base V8 engine available in all of the Full-Size trucks. This all makes for a truck that is faster than what most people are comfortable with. Keeping up with traffic is not a problem for Dakota owners.
The MPG is really pretty poor on all of the 3.9 differential equiped Dakotas. There are a lot of people that aren't willing to chance a decrease in that area, for a small performance increase.
Seems to me there is adaquate support anyway. I can't think of any typical performance items that are not available for these vehicles. Unless you have a 4.7.
What is it you are looking for?

RAMDAKOTA-

I've got a 99 cc r/t. It's got a few mods, nothin' big. Cold air intake, cam, headwork, and exhaust. As far as the performance of stock Dakotas, I agree. Even the 3.9 V6's aren't that bad, better than an S-10, and wwwaaaaayyyyyy better than a ranger (imo). I'm just saying that compared to other trucks on the market, the aftermarkets' support for the Dakota is kind of weak. For example, there are literally hundreds of wheels to fit the Silverado, F-150, and S-10 (not sure aboout Tacoma's and Ranger's bolt patterns), but there's really not a large selection for Dakotas. Nothing over 18" inches anyway. I'm just saying it would be nice to see the aftermarket pay more attention to our trucks, that's all. But I don't guess it's that bad, that just means we don't have to worry about not being able to drive a city block without seeing a truck identical to ours. As far as "what I'm looking for", I pretty much know what parts I want for my truck, it's just the matter of having the money to buy them. I'm working two jobs right now (on top of school!)and still have a tight budget:(

Well rims over 18" are for BLING BLING punks who drive Silverados and S-10's so I don't care that they don't make em for a Dakota. They would look rediculous and be impractical. I'd rather get a programmer or something like that for the Dakota!

Hey man, easy. I just using that as an exaample. I'm a performance guy all the way! I like show trucks, but would rather have a "go" truck:) That's why I drive an r/t with engine mods instead of an S-10 bagged with chrome 18"s and a huge system (not that I have the money anyway).Besides, I'm not a big Chevy fan, nothing against them, I just prefer Mopar:)

stephen,
There are lots of after market wheels that fit the Dakota. Of course, there's not as many as for the Chevys, but nearly evry manufacture of wheels offers something. Even Enki and some other expensive brands offer Dakota wheels.

The 2005 model should be easier to get wheels for since it has 5 lugs instead of 6. At least that is what I read.
