Any one know about how much it would cost to go down to the dodge dealer and have them install a limited slip on my 1997 dakota sport 4x4? I need to fix all the wheel spin I am getting when I accelerate. Thanks

If you are going to spend the time and money for extra traction get something that actually works like a Detroit Locker. LSD sucks. There are several aftermarket manufactures of mechanical ratcheting/locking differentials and all of them are better than the factory LSD.

Lockers suck for street driving especially in rain and ice. If you're getting alot of wheel spin try getting new tires or ease up on the pedal.

Limited slip with better tires. Lockers chew up tires and create horrible noise and uncomfortable driving. If you are racing only once in a while then the limited is what you need. If your truck never leaves the track, then get a locker. Dealer installed limited slips add to the resale value of the truck BTW. Also, parts alone will cost about $700 from the dealer, and labor will be around 6 hours give or take to install it. Check you dealers labor rate and do the math, all in all its going to be around $1000.

Take it to a gear shop and get it done not the stealer. I had an LSD unit put in after wiping out my spider gears on the open wheel unit. Along with some 3.91 gears from Richmond. It was all reasonably priced and done right the first time.

The Neon SRT-4 has no problem with the mechanical locking differentials. All of the super hot FWD cars have them now. If they work good for FWD they damn sure will work for RWD. They were developed for STREET use with OCCASIONAL strip use.

TRUTH,
Quit hiding behind a fake name because you don't know what your talking about. In wet weather you will have such little traction that any locking rear end will present a problem. If you like high mainteneance pieces of sh!t that wear out in 50K then stick with the LSD. If you want a quality piece that will outlast and outperform LSD then get the Detroit TrueTrac. The TrueTrac is the same design used on the SRT-4 and it was designed for use in the front axle of 4WD vehicles. It has no cluthes to wear out. The deisgn is superior to anything else on the market. It only cost about $200.00 more than LSD and will last 4 times longer than LSD.

Mr.Sleepy,
I don't think too many SRT-4's are spending 100% of their time on the track. FWD are more vunerable to the forces induced by a locking differential than a RWD car and yet the SRT-4 comes standard with a MECHANICAL LOCKING differential that is the same design used in the DETROIT TRUE TRAC. In the test drive that Motor Trend did on the NON-Locking differential 2002 SRT-4 and the LOCKING-differntial 2003 SRT-4 the 2003 blew the doors off the 2002 in the slalom. They credited this extra performance/speed through the slalom to the LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL! This exact same differential design can be in your Dakota for $600.00. If you have a 4WD Dakota you can have it in both front and rear and you can still drive the truck on pavement in 4wd mode. You can't do that with LSD without tearing something up.

I hate to burst your bubble R/TBlues, but according to Tractech, the manufacturers of the Detroit Truetrac, it is an LSD.

NOPE!! LSD will not work on a FWD. The NEON SRT-4 has a TrueTrac. THERE ARE NO CLUTCHES. The magazine you read does not know what the hell their talking about or you have done too much "LSD" yourself. J/K!!

Go to...http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/TrueTrac.shtml

Scroll about half way down the page and they have a full exploded view of the TrueTrac. It operates on helical cut gears that float to change the speed of the inside and outside tires without anything slipping to cause heat or anything grabbing/disengaging. You can see for yourself that there are no clutches and we will end all rumors, speculations, lies, and myths about traction enhancing differentials right here and now. The Detroit TrueTrac is the ultimate street/strip differential that delivers 100% of the time with NO LOSS OF DRIVEABILITY!!!!
It actually is easier on the tires than LSD!!! For $200.00 more, you can have your cake and eat it too. This differential will actually pay for itself in reduced maintenance cost and reduced tire wear. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!

HAHA...actually I'm more of an MDMA man myself. But seriously, look at the blurb above the picture, under the heading:

Differentials - Limited Slip (torque - sensitive) Type

it says the Truetrac is a geared-LSD.

But whatever it is, I'm definitely gonna look into it when I can afford it.

If someone wants more traction and doesn't mind the rear tires binding a little Richmond Gear makes a locking differential called the POWERTRAX. It is supposed to operate without any noise..... Who knows. They all claim to be superior to their competitors. It does look like a quality piece. I also like the TrueTrac for what it does. It does the same thing the factory LSD does without any friction and zero maintenance and NO CHATTER. It is still a LSD which means it won't always do what it's supposed to do. It does work better than the clutch type LSD. I prefer the locking style diffs. Detroit makes one now that has an electric selonoid that locks the diff. You just flip a switch and both wheels have full traction all the time.
