Subject: Raced a TSI
IP: Logged

Message:
Well 2 nights ago I raced an eagle talon TSI that I was told was stock. The turbo whistled kinda loud and his BOV was louder than what I thought a stock turbo should be but said screw it. I went to the end of the road and waited while a "friend" measured off the quarter. We take off and I pulled a hole shot I wish was on video. Then he starts creeping back up. And we go, and go, and go, and I'm like this is way longer than a 1/4 and he goes by and just keeps going. I was pissed. Went back out there yesterday morning and measured it myself. Turns out we raced 6 1/10's of a mile. No freekin wonder. We got him to pop the hood lastnight and to our surprise... Bigger turbo with a nice chrome housing, larger fuel injectors, and a new ignition. I said thats kinda what I figured. We went off and measured off another 1/4 this time it seemed about right. Lined up and ran again. Same result, I pulled a 3 car length hole shot and he had to catch up. Well he did, right before the line. Ended up beating me by a fender and half a door. Funniest part... I drive a 4x4 CC with a 5.2 and auto...

No doubt. That's great for a 4X4

Mine's a 4X4 too. I love beating fart canned Civic's out of the hole and seeing their faces!

Trucks OBVIOUSLY have a big dis advantage as speed increases. It's called AIR RESISTANCE (drag). The Eagle and a Civic are BOTH made for low air drag. So these guys wanting to race to 140 are of course going to pull at the end unless you got some extra HP per Lb to get an advantage.

As far as I'm concerned, first 0-60 wins on the street. No reason to be doing faster than that in the city and with other traffic.

I bet that was not an AWD Talon. TSI (if it was even a turbo car), means that it has a turbo, if someone says “TSI”, it is assumed that it is a FWD.

But who are you kidding? A FWD turbo Talon is almost half the weight of 4x4 truck with almost the same amount of power… Spend $500 on the RIGHT parts and that car will make 260-280 hp. Combine it with AWD and you can run high 12’s for $500-$600. You should not be trying to compete against those cars, they are NOTHING like Hondahs…

My friend owns a slightly modified Talon TSI AWD, it's always been a low 15 high 14 second car. With some mods he is inching his way dow into the low 14's but even a new turbo is only going to get him to high 13's.

well i am not saying 12s are impossible... its just you need a lot to get there.

i am guessing you would need:

bigger turbo
better exhaust manifold
swap the cams
injectors
exhaust
front mount intercooler

stuff like that... and that isnt any $500

I'm not trying to defend the TSI guy, I know for a fact those cars cost much more than 500$ to get to 12, I think it cost him over 500$ to get into mid 14's.

Guys,

As with any car, there are right ways of spending money of those cars (DSMs) and there are the wrong ways… I have been racing those cars since ’95, so I know how to make them go fast :).

I have build several cars with $500-$700 worth of mods which ran high 12’s (fastest one was 12.7). And I keep things realtively safe. Other have made it into mid 12’s by pushing the safety evelope even farther (running too lean). But I would not advise that.

If you have a friend who’s modified DSM was running high 14’s/low 15’s, then he didn’t modify it right… Let me put this way, a good driver can pull high 14 sec ET on a bone stock DSM. But frankly, those cars suck in stock form. You can make them go fast, for so little money, that anyone keeping one stock is not interested in going fast.

As for big turbo. Stock turbo (TD04) is good for well over 300wheel HP (add ~15% if you want crank numbers) and 11.84 sec timeslip (I have a dyno printout, a timeslip and a video to prove it).

Leon,

you still didnt list $500 worth of parts

now are you talking about $500 worth of parts out of a catalog, or $500 worth of parts with a welder, grinder and some fish tank valves?

... because i am sure that just a good down pipe and exhaust is gonna cost half of that $500

Well I posted this just because I thought it was funny. Yes I got beat, TWICE, but good god what do you expect. It was a TSI, it's not AWD, and yes it really does have a turbo. I know the guy who bought the car and see him at least 4 nights a week riding around. I'm not a moron I know what I'm talking about. He raced a probe GT and an eclipse gs and beat them so bad it was silly. I also raced the probe GT in the 1/8th and it was not a pretty site for the probe to say the least.

I am not sure this really belongs on this forum (there are plenty of DSM forums), but you guys asked for it so here it goes.

Formula to run 12’s on a 1G (90-94 AWD DSM):

2.5” Buschur Racing cat-back $285
2.5” test pipe $50
Boost gauge $40
Manual boost controller $50
K&N filter $40

+all the “free” mods from www.dms.org

Sorry, I was wrong, that is only $465 worth of parts :)

Assuming that you are starting with a well tuned, well running/shifting car, you can run high 12’s with the above mods. Many people have done it!

If you get a fuel pump ($200), port your turbo and adjacent parts (~$150) and add a fuel computer like Apexi SAFC (~$200-$300, depending on a model), you can run mid to low 12’s.

Again, this is NOT a well kept secret. Go to www.dsmtimes.org for some other fast DSM times.

As for my Talon running 11’s on a stock turbo, here is its video:

http://www.theta.net/nichols/neweng...on1184on14b.MOV

You should be able to see the time on that video.

I will have to add the dyno print out later.

not saying i believe that an exhaust, filter and cranking up the boost is the safest way to do it... but still.
