I have that exact tire and like them alot. They do very well in all types of soil and have won several mud tire shootouts in magazines. It's no worse on gas mileage than any other aggressive tread mud tire and no better either.

While I don't have first-hand experience, I have to say that all the off-road/4x4 mags have nothing but praise for the MT/R's. I have seen some cool ass shots of one of the Durango guys playing with his new set of MT/R's.

Mudding with MT/R's

He belongs to the Durango Owners Club, and posted this a little while back. Apparently, he got stuck on his first run, but after some assitance getting backed up, he was able to claw his way through the rest. On his second attempt, he made it through with no problems. That speaks a lot about these tires.

I have seen other tires of that size on 8" wheels so I don't see why they wouldn't. You won't get quite as good wear out of them due to the centers wearing before the edges but if you were really concerned about tread wear you wouldn't be buying mud tires! The only reason they recommend the wider wheel is so the tire dosn't cup quite as bad. I say go for it. Hawkeye has the same size xterrains on 8" rims and loves them.

Yes, you can run 33x12.50's on 8 inch rims with no problem. Its quite common and nothing strange about it. Every set of 33's I have had have been on 8's. As far as wear, I have never had a problem with mine. Just keep them inflated right and rotate regularly and they will be fine.
Think about it. An 8.5 inch wide rim is a half inch wider than an 8 inch one. That means the tire gets an extra 1/4 inch on either side. Take out a ruler. Look at a 1/4 inch. Do you think it will make much difference? I have never seen a 8.5 inch wide rim anyway. 16.5x8.75 is the closest. Every 16 or 15 inch rim I have ever seen goes from 8 inches wide to 10 inches wide.

Save yourself the money and stress on the parts. Go with the 8's. I think the 10's are more affective with 35x12.50's personally. Nothing meant to those who have 33's on 10's though.

35 psi normally. Seems to have them riding pretty flat on the tread. Might go down to 33 and see how they do.

Recommended air pressure on the Xterrain sidewall is like 52psi isn't it? I have mine @ 40psi, might try lower if you are running at 35psi on the road Hawkeye without any problems with wearing.

I think the maximum pressure is something like that. Its always best to run just enough air to make the tires ride flat on the tread with your normal load weight. Add air if needed if you are carrying a load.
Take a piece of chalk, draw a line across the entire tread area from one side to another. Drive down the road a bit, preferably in a straight line. Look to see where the chalk is wearing off. You want it to wear off all the way across evenly. If it wears on the edges first, then add air. If it wears off in the middle, then let air out.

Hawkeye: That's a really good way to determine proper tire pressure. Another is to get your weighed. Run just the front tires on the scale and then just the rear tires & get two weights. You can then go through & plot out tire pressure on a chart starting at 0 weight/0 PSI, and going up to the maximum pressure & load rating written on the tire. The only bad thing is that with a truck, you end up with different tire pressures between the front & rear axles. I used to do this with my old Ranger...had the chart printed out on a 3x5 note card & laminated. I must say that I noticed way better tread wear/life after I started doing this.

jLo: He's just one of the fellow Durango Owners Club members. Shortly after getting his MT/R's he went out playing & posted a rave on that forum (including that link) about how sweet the tires were. So....not sure exactly who/where he is.

I have a 98 Durango and put on a 3 inch body lift and 33 inch MT/R tires on 8 inch American Eagle 1189 wheels. The combination worked great and the tires are fantastic for the street. They didn't make any noise when I first put them on and now after about 3000 miles that are making a nice humming sound going down the road. They are definitely not too aggressive for the street like some people would think. Highly recommend them so far. I bought the tires on Ebay brand new for $607.00 including shipping. Best deal around!

Just bought 285/70/R16 GY AT/S's last weekend. Sweet tire, fairly quiet too, but I'm worried about the balance this morning. One tire has 4.5 onces on the outside, then something like 3 on the opposite inside corner. This morning after sitting all night, I got in it to go to work, and it shook like mad going down the road. After a mile or so it went away. It's never seen offroad yet so I know the rims didn't have mud or anything in them. They were just off anyway. Could they flat spot over night? How much is too much lead? I'm not sure what to do next....

Hey everyone I have a 98 Durango 4x4 with a 3" body lift and I'm clearing 35" on the factory wheels. I'm running MTR's on it right now and just got rid of a set of 35" Baja Claw Radials.

The MTR's are a better tire on rocks, tire tread wear, and on rain/or wet roads. As far as in the mud and snow I had better luck with the Baja Claws, mostly because of the more aggressive tread pattern. As far as tire pressure I have found on the factory 8" wheels with the 35" MTR's do best at 25PSI on the interstate or for every day driving I run them at about 20. This makes a great footprint and still wears very well. I have had the tires for about 2 yrs, they have about 28-30,000 miles on them and still have about 1/2 to 3/4 tread left on them. The biggest plus I have found with the MTR's is the fact that the side wall is so stiff I ran them at 10PSI one weekend while doing some wheeling at the Badlands, in Attica Indiana.

I have some very slight rubbing with the 285 BFG's. I have not done any trimming nor have I turned up the torsion bars either yet. I'm going to try that here soon to see if I could stop it. If I'd do this again I think I'd have put 305's on her. There's room with a little carfull trimming.
