Subject: 4x4 vs 4x2 lifts

Message:
ok i have a 4x2 2000. and i want to lift it well
the biggest lift i can find is a 3". now for the
4x4's alot more can be done. what is the
difference between the two lifts? why wouldnt;a
4x4 lift work on a 4x2. if both suspensions are
coils in th front and leafs in the back then why
wouldn;t it work? this may seem a stupid question
but i really don;t know the answer

4x4's have torsion bars up front, not coils. Also you have the front axle to deal with. The upper and lower a arms are different. The anti-sway bar is different. The entire geometry of the front of a 4x4 is different than a 2wd.

wait, so there aren't torsion bars I can crank up on a 2wd, or is that just for Dak/Durango 2wd's...dammit, there's a lot I need to learn

2WD Durangos and Dakotas have coil springs instead of torsion bars on the front end. Also on the 2WDs the rear leafsprings are under the axle , not on top like the 4X4s are , so there is a little more work involved to get the back higher too.

more that 3" from a suspension lift. but i guess

You flipped the rear springs and didn`t do the front end ? Yikes! Maybe I`m misunderstanding you.

O.K. I was confused because you said you had already flipped your springs and it wasn`t that hard. Apparently you were not talking about the same truck. Sorry.

I still think if you put a 2" inch spacer between the upper a-arm and the upper ball joint, on the 3" fab tech kit, you'll be able to get 5" of suspension out of it. Also put a 2" Daystar coil spring spacer for the spring. And going to have to get longer shocks. Has anyone tried this with the 2wd's. It would seem to replace the problem with not being able to get spindles for these trucks. Greg

stealwings, the front end suspension on our 2wd daks don't have unlimited travel. If it did, I would have lifted it more a loooong time ago. In fact, I bet the MAX lift you could do (coil wise) would be about 4"... and that means your a-arms are resting on the frame. You would have no upward travel left for the suspension. The 3" Fabtech lift (or any 3" lift) is pretty much the max you can do for the dakoka front end. Sure you COULD put in a 5" coil or a 3" coil with a 2" spacer, but all your doing is giving yourself a stiffer ride with no suspension or ride height.

I hope this makes sense. I'm not trying to burst any bubbles, just trying to give some info and save you time and money before you jump into it.

Man... I really wish I had some spindles right now... :-/

Adam,
If you put on 3" in the front, the back will be around 1" shorter than the front. Add-a-leafs will level it out, or some sort of helper springs.
