Well, seems its back up and running. Everything appears to be ok. No leaks, and new t-stat kicked on fine. Will get it on the road tomorrow and get it really heated up and see how it does. I like working on my truck, but NOT like this!

Hey Hawkeye,

Good job fixing the T-stat!!!

I have a question for you or whom ever else who has monitored this.

I read on your post about the spark plugs. I have always been a beleiver in changing them frequently but some say that I am making more work for myself than I need to be.
I usually change the cap, rotor and Spark plugs at 20K.

Is there a rule of thumb or just personal preference?

I pulled out my Original plugs at 20k and found the gap to be over .52 and the new gap was to be .40. Major difference all around. Plus the cap and rotor had allot of carbon and signs of archin.
I just changed them again after 10k and the first signs of reoccurance were there.
The new plugs I got were to be gapped at .35 according to NAPA. So I put new ones in at that and it seems allot better. SO now I am not sure if the new spark plug gap made that much of a change or just changing everything did. The plugs I just pulled out were at about .43-.45.
I think I am just going to start doing this every 10K for the $30.00 for the new parts the power diff is worth it.
By the way the Hanson bumper sure does make it alot easier to do the tune up. Used it as a kneeling spot and made acces to everything very easy. I was amazed at how quickly I was able to finish.

I'm using Autolite 3923's and have been told by a few people that they (the 3923's) should be changed about every 7k to 10k. These had about 10 or so on them. With mine I can tell a difference in the power and the exhaust tone. Once it lost that change in the exhaust tone, I knew it was time to change. Just drove it today for the first time. Ahhhhhhhhh! Back to normal. Just need to refill the radiator with anti-freeze. Its mainly water right now. Whats everyones favorite anti-freeze? Remember, its a tad warm here in FL, so I need one that cools really well.

Ok, as far as antifreeze goes, there is some new stuff that is purple compared to the older green stuff, it's supposed to last 100K without having to flush the system...a big improvement over the 30K flushing using the green stuff.

As far a spark-plugs go...if your get platinum tipped ones, they go for 50K-100K, depending on off-road and engine condition, and as far as cap and rotor and wires, that's an every 30K job, but if you do it every 20K that just means that parts will have less of a chance of deteriorating and causing problems. It's like people that change their oil at 2500 instead of 3000, it's all just preventative measures.
